Default 2004 Club Car Precedent - Recs and Advice for a Newb

Hi All,

I'm new to the forum and have recently acquired a 2004 CC Precedent from my Father in Law. I've been reading the posts in detail the last few days and realize there is a lot more to a golf cart than I ever realized! I'm trying to determine my next steps for upgrades, and would like some advice from the experienced here at this forum to point me in the right direction as I'm a little overwhelmed at this point! Everything appears to be stock as far as I can tell.

Stats:

2004 Club Car Precedent = SN: PE0438-xxxxxx
Motor: Club Car Part #: 102240102 Model #: 5BC59JBS6365 Voltage: 48
Controller: Curtis 1510-5201, 250amp
Batteries: 4x12V - Interstate 12VGCUTL


I am getting top speeds around 18PMH right now on flat ground, but I have some serious slow down when going up even light hills. The batteries are marked as being from 2013, so it may very well be them. They seem to last a long time while riding however. I ordered a digital meter from ScottyB that should be coming in this week so I can keep an eye on the voltage when I start up the hills when it slows down.

So, where should I go from here? I'd like to get 20+ MPH and make some enhancements that make sense long term.

I've read a few posts about folks that converted their 4x12V batteries to a 6x8V system. What are the benefits of doing this or the cons of the 4x12V system. I'll likely try to make my batteries last at least this summer so want to make sure I buy the correct system when I look to replace.

I work 5min from PlumQuick. I could easily get the $225 Bandit put in as a start without upgrading the other components. Will I get better results by upgrading the motor first, or by upgrading the controller first?

Also, where is the best place to by replacement seats? I have been searching but can't find exactly what I'm looking for. The front seat is pulling away from the plastic edging. Is that something a seat cover will be best for or buying the entire seat assembly will be necessary?

One last thing , I have noticed my front tires seem to be pointing outward, top to bottom (pics below). Is this standard for the Precedent? Sometimes on a tight turn or going over a bump I'll hear a loud knocking noise coming from the front of the cart. I've been wondering if it's the tires bowing out signifying a tie rod or suspension issue on the front.

Welcome to the forum sciggs. I am not one of the more experienced people here but until someone with the knowledge comes along, I will inject the little bit I do know. The loud knocking you hear is most likely the rubber bushings in your front suspension. They wear out over time and cause the noise. I think bad bushings can also contribute to the “tires pointing outward” (camber”). The bushings are not expensive and are not hard to replace. I did mine in about an hour. Took care of all the knocking sounds.

As for the motor, controller, solenoid stuff, I will let the smart guys answer your questions. I am not there yet and don’t want to steer you wrong.

Again, welcome. This is a great place with a bunch of great guys.

Thanks for the info Bob! That sounds about right. I should be able to physically look at the bushings and see if they are worn out or not. I'll do that tomorrow. I would imagine they are the originals.

IMO the Alltrax is the best mod to do first as it unlocks so much potential out of even the stock motor. Of course that means making bigger cables and also replacing the solenoid to a higher amperage unit. But it is so worth it.

On the batteries, 6x8 will ultimately give you greater range than the 4x12 setup you currently have. I’d check the water in your current batteries before you pull the trigger on new ones. They may need some love and you might be able to get some good use out of them before forking over the cash for a new pack.

Thanks E36. So would you recommend the Alltrax 400AMP as the first start with the 200AMP Solenoid? Just making sure spending $600-700 out of the gate (assuming battery cable upgrades) is more bang for my buck up front than a $225 PQ Bandit.

For the batteries, I checked all of the water levels and sprayed them all with Baking Soda & Water mix earlier this month for cleaning. I'm not really noticing any battery issues at this time. They seem to last a good while and the only issue is seen on inclines with 2+ people aboard.

It depends what your long term plans are. I have the 500 amp Alltrax because I figured no matter what I did later it could handle it. The incremental cost over the 400 amp isn’t much since it comes with the fan. People have had great success with only the 300 amp version as well. However when it comes to increasing power/performance I’m a go big or go home kind of guy.

Following this thread as I am in the same situation as the OP. Just got an '06 CC Precedent from my brother, my first cart. Batteries were shot so just installed 4 new 12V Continentals. Wanting to gain a little more speed and torque as my club has a couple hills to climb. Plus, who doesn't like going faster.

Been cruising the forum for a couple days now picking up bits of info here and there. Definitely looking forward to starting my cart journey.

Were those Continentals specifically GOLF CART BATTERIES? If not, try to return them and get golf cart batteries. They will give you a lot more service. Non g/c batteries will make it go but not very far, not very fast and not very long.

They are the 2GC-1275. The dealer said they are made by same manufacturer as Trojans.

I would post links to the spec pages for both batteries but the forum will not allow me since I am a new member.


The Continentals are also the same batteries that I removed from the cart that my brother had used for almost 5 years before the cart sat for 1.5 years of no use.

That said, the dealer offers the Trojans as well for $25 more a battery, he was just out of stock. Price was $130ea for Continentals or $155 for Trojans.

Do you or anyone else think I should return the Cont for Trojan? I have to go back to the dealer next Tuesday to pick up some other parts. I'm sure he would take them back in exchange for Trojans.

As long as they are golf car batteries, I see no problem. If your brother got 5 years out of them, they must be pretty good. I had not heard of Continental golf car batts. They should serve you just fine. Check the stickies above and read the one about batteries. Lots of good info.
