Default installing a voltmeter

I am installing a voltmeter into a 1994 club car ds. I was told to run the 3rd wire from the voltmeter to the keyswitch. My problem is my keyswitch only has two prongs and doesn't seem to be the 36v i was expecting. What do i connect this 3rd w'ire to so that it is only on when the key is on?

I like having mine on all the time, to see voltage any time. The draw is minimal.

Is it a digital voltmeter or analog? I have a digital volt meter but it only has 2 wires. If its analog then that 3rd wire may be for an instrument light to see it at night. I connected to the hot side of the key switch for my positive then installed a toggle switch beside the meter so its not on all the time and I don't have to turn the key to get a reading.

Some carts have a neg. wire key switch. You may have one of those.

You likely have an early 1994 model which has a negative key switch.

As long as it is a digital voltmeter (no led fuel gauge), just connect the two positive wires together to the pack positive.

Connect the negative to the key switch "cold side" which is the blue wire.

Your meter will now be controlled by the key switch.

This post helped me out a BUNCH! I'm looking at the wiring and wondering why my key switch is wired up wrong to the NEGATIVE side.

Now I know why! THANKS!

Its a digital Led Voltmeter It has a Red, black, and a yellow.
So i should run the yellow and red to pack positive and the black to blue key switch wire?

I also have a digital voltmeter I need to install. But mine only has two wires. A black and a red. Can I connect the red to the hot side of the ignition switch (the one that is NOT the blue wire) and the black from the voltmeter to the ignition switch terminal that does have the blue wire? Or do I need to run a ground wire all the way back to the negative on one of the batteries?

It depends on whether your key switch is negative or positive. See above. If it is a negative switch, connect the red wire from the voltmeter to one of the blades on your fuse buss and connect the black wire to the blue wire on your key switch.

I have a 2007 Club Car Precedent. I think I read somewhere on here that the negative switches were rare. Only on Club Cars for a couple of year models back in the late 90's. So I'm guessing I have a positive ignition switch.
