Default Alltrax XCT 400 or 500 Controller

I’m trying to decide what makes the most sense. If you add a fan kit to the 400 amp controller, the price difference is less than $20 (site sponser). With that price difference, why buy the 400? Is the fan necessary?

In my case, I’m just getting started on my first cart. It is a 2014 Precedent that will eventually end up with a 4” lift to accomodate larger wheels. It will be used primarily on the street with occasional golf course use. At some point, I will upgrade the motor.

Will the 400 without the fan be plenty for all but the most extreme motors/conditions?

The experts will be along shortly, but from what i recall, volts increase speed. So, the 500 will only provide more torque, which you may need with the lift/bigger wheels. I have the 400 (no fan yet) and it doesn't get too hot, even in summer. But if you are hammering it in hot weather it certainly wouldn't hurt to get a fan. Mine is stock height with a high speed motor from EMP. Again, more knowledgable fellas will chime in soon.

I'm not the expert but have been reading about them on here recently and will tell you what I keep reading....get the 500. For the price difference it's worth it to have the larger controller. You can turn it down to a 400 basically before you get the upgraded motor, but you can't go the other way if you get the 400. The 400 may be all you ever need but for the price difference I'd go with the 500.

Go big or go home. LOL
I started with a 500 and turned it down with a stock motor. I now have a larger motor and am very happy. 23" wheels, 25 mph and plenty of torque. Budget for larger cables and a solenoid with it also.

There is one small problem with the fan. When you park and turn the key off it turns the fan off. I wish Alltrax could program it so the fan would stay on until the controller cooled down.

Perhaps a design limitation... But I certainly wouldn't take that as a reason not to buy the fan. Buy the 500 if you ever intend to upgrade your motor, and get the fan included for free.

The few times that I've parked and heard the fan running, outside temps near 100, I put the FNR switch in neutral, and leave the key on. I putter around getting the charger cord ready, I lift the seat up and use a bungee cord to secure it to the mirror post. The fan always stops running in less than a minute, usually in about 30 seconds. I then plug in the charger.

Even if you must turn the switch off with the fan still running, I'm sure that it's designed with that in mind. If it really bothers you, just treat it like a horse or the original truck/auto turbos and limit your throttle application as you get near where you are going.

I always end up going big ! I was looking at my complete list (controller, solenoid, cables, batteries, motor, light kit, voltage reducer, rear seat kit, lift kit and wheels and tires) trying to figure out how to get it past the gatekeeper (aka the Wife) without a fight.

Hook the main power up with a 50 amp fuse and let her drive it. When the fuse blows tell her she broke it
