Default 2009 Precedent Excel speed upgrade

Is purchasing a new motor controller the only way to increase speeds on my 2009 Precedent with an Excel drive system?

I know the speed magnet trick does not work in these Excel carts but can anyone explain exactly why not?

Speed code 4 will get you to about 20 with no change in torque.

Alltrax will get you mid-20’s and added torque with the stock motor.

Motor and Alltrax, possibilities are endless.

One of my first projects with my Precedent Excel was to devise a system to allow the Gray controller to go faster.

At that time I had access to a Tektronix 4 channel storage oscilloscope that I used to gather the relation of Armature, Field and motor pulses during a regular drive and then using a 4-pole magnet.

I used that data to model and write code to give the controller a "virtual Reality" tach pulse that was based on the actual speed sensor pulses (not just a "divide by" linear type system).

What it appears to me the Excel Controller was doing is roughly calculating the speed based on the BEMF it can measure during the time the FET driver on M- is turned OFF.

Since the specs of the motor are known, the Controller can get a good estimate of the RPM based on the amount of residual BEMF measured at M- when the driver is OFF.

This may also be the reason why certain aftermarket motors are able to defeat the system by simply being a pretty bad generator and creating a BEMF much lower than the stock motor at the same rpm.

This is just a guess and I no longer use my device, it was a lot of fun working the code but I now have an Altrax XCT which I am also having fun creating projects around it.

I was looking into this a while back for an Excel cart and was told that although the IQ and I2/Excels were very similar, the controllers differed greatly and one difference was the IQ basically looked at just the speed sensor for its input, but on the I2/Excel, it looked at three different parameters of which the speed sensor was only one and that was why it did not work as successfully as it did for IQ's. (I believe David was the one that explained it to me)

Thanks for all of the info, guys. Sounds like the Alltrax is the guaranteed solution. Correct me if I'm wrong, the adjust the speed to code 4 requires a visit to a technician?

Yes it does require a technician with the programmer in addition to purchasing the speed 4 codes from Club Car.

The Altrax software is free, the controller provides more torque in addition to increasing the speed and it is fully customizable by the end user.
