so how do you check the water level in batteries?

i've had new trojan batteries since a year ago april, have never added water to them until today
water still over plates by maybe 3/16", but hard to tell without using a dipstick
i dipsticked one cell and added about 2 ounces of water to each cell
i ruined my last set (8 yr old) by filling them like a car battery to the split ring (before i found bgw)

so without using a dipstick on each cell how do you tell if the water is 1/4'' over the plates?

I have a plastic piece of 5/16" rod that I have marked at 1/4" and 1/2" increments. I check the cells of one battery and then use it as a gauge to fill them. You can also use a straight plastic funnel and mark the sides of it too. Just lift it up and see where the water line is in relations to your marks.

I've been filling mine to the bottom of the split ring - like the top of my drawing. They don't boil over when charging, but should I be filling them 1/4" above the plates like the bottom drawing?

Which way is better for my batteries? They're brand new so I want them to last as long as possible... Thanks!

I don't believe you can ruin batteries by filling to the neck split ring. If you got 8 yrs out of a set of batteries they just reached a point of where they had a lot resistance across the plates and cant take a charge. The important thing is to keep the plates submerged and charge them after every use. I add distilled water 12 hrs after a complete charge.
