Electrical Problems - lighting
Hello. I have a 2011 CC Precedent (48v - 6x. All worked fairly well except for a somewhat common (from what I hear) "jerking" going up hill initially and slightly slower speeds. We had "a golf cart guy" look at and suggested some fixes for the issues, but due to cost, we didn't do any fixes. The guy said he did us a favor and fixed the rear light problem. (I never saw any lighting problems.)
Fast forward to a week or so after return of the cart - the first time I drove it. I turned the lights on, they flashed for a second and then went out. The rear lights did work, but the turn signal basically became the flashers. A few weeks later and no lights or horn works. (I haven't taken it back to the guy because 1) I don't trust him and 2) I never knew him or his contact info. My wife dealt with him as she is at home during the day.) I checked the fuse (OK). I checked continuity and voltage throughout the system. There is continuity, but my question is that I'm seeing 34v anywhere I check (lights, harness connectors, light switch, etc). The batteries are 8v, so 32v or 40v makes more sense. I checked from the switch power to the battery and verified it's getting voltage from 4 batteries (about 8.5v x 4 for 34v). So, shouldn't it be 12v for the electrical system? I assume there should be a voltage reducer, but I couldn't find one. Should there be one built in? If it's gone bad, would it send 0v or full voltage? Is it normal that the system would be placed on the 4th battery for 32-34v)? BTW, we have a MadJax light system. I watched their video for installation which didn't reference a voltage reducer. I'm fairly sure the voltage is the problem - whether that has damaged any other components; perhaps a bad relay? Any help is appreciated. |

Take a picture of the top of your battery pack and post it. Need to see where your picking up your 48v at.

Battery 4 (2nd horizontal battery towards the top). The blue cable is connected to positive and then to the wiring harness.

First you need to verify that you have a 16v to 12v reducer. If you do you need to reconnect the blue wire one battery lower. I have attached a picture with it circled in white. I wouldn't be surprised if all of your bulbs aren't blown. After you change it verify you got about 12v at the bulb sockets. I'll try and find a picture of the reducer.

The reducer is located on the passenger side of the cart. It is almost directly behind the shock. With twice the amount of voltage going to it I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't bad also. Here's what it looks like.

Thanks for your help Walter. I've looked and can't find that reducer anywhere. I've attached pictures of the wiring behind the dash panel and under the front, at the shock area. Perhaps seeing the wiring would tell if there's a connection for the reducer that I can't find.
The only wiring going towards the shock is the harness to the horn/lights. You can see that the harness goes behind the dash and connects directly to the horn/light harness. The reducer is nowhere inline there. Can you tell from the connections behind the dash panel if you see the connector for the reducer? 2 harnesses run from the panel back to the battery area. |

Also, the post you have circled is on the 3rd battery in the circuit. Wouldn't that be 24v? I measure 16v on the 2nd battery (below the one you noted).

You are seeing 34v because you don’t have a voltage reducer. Each battery is 8.5v when fully charged. 8.5 x 4 = 34v
If you had one it would be mounted where circled and the wiring installed between the circled plugs. |

So, the only assumption - do you think - is the guy removed the reducer? I read on some parts sites that the lights could work with 16v. Just trying to be positive that the guy isn't a thief, do you think it's possible that it worked connected to 2 batteries (16-18v) and they blew because he reconnected them incorrectly? We've had the cart for about 3 years and never had a problem until this guy looked at it.
