Heat is caused by resistance so there is a problem in the connection, the lug attachment or the copper inside the cable. Check the first 2 (connection and lug) and of nothing found check the resistance between that cable compared to the next cable of the same length.

How do you check resistance? I have a volt meter.

Does it have an Ohms setting? If so, attach your probes to both ends of the cables.

Since it does not appear you are noticing a performance loss, it will be hard to measure the resistance on the cable with a regular multi-meter.

Just swap that cable with another one between batteries.

If the heat follows the cable, replace the cable,

If a different cable gets warm in the same location, check the battery posts the warm cable is connecting.
