95 club car DS

A 88 year old guy from our park stopped by with his 95 club car 48 volt DS. He wanted to see if I could slow it down a little. I took it on a test drive and when you depress the pedal it feels like it goes half way down then the solenoid clicks and the cart goes full speed. It feels like it is missing first gear.

didn't club car use a pot box in 95/early 96 carts? could that be a problem?

I have on hand 3 48 volt motors, could I change the motor to a lower HP? will that even help? Right now his cart has a high speed motor. Its pretty fast.
I dont want to see him get hurt. He has dementia so he has a hard time understanding to not drive his cart. We have a little 9 hole golf course that he plays every day when he's here. ( snow bird )

You can change the motor back to stock (3.2hp) and that will make it slower as it is a series cart.

There were pot boxes from 95 to mid-96 and they worked well. I still have several in use. There are no replacement parts for them anymore so it it fails, it will need an MCOR 4 conversion and you can get it from David Hicks at Revolution Golf Cars.

A new motor is clearly not the answer here, fix the throttle or at least put the 1/2 speed resistor on the circuit at all times.

If it is a Series cart You check the throttle signal on terminals #2 and #3 on the Controller.

In 1995 the CVP was used and it could definitely have that symptom.

As NoleFan4Ever mentioned, upgrading to an MCOR would be best, but I think this is the same replacement pot you need (possibly a micro-switch as well):

I thought I still had one in my garage cabinet, but I do not see it. I had pulled one apart a couple of years ago as the micro-switch failed. Never could find a replacement and I went through Mouser to McMaster-Carr and my I&C techs at work with various vendors.

That one looks different, but I swear I cannot remember clearly as it has been quite a while ago....

As an alternative I have successfully used a locally sourced 0 - 20k (full turn) potentiometer. The 1/4 turn the linkage gives it worked out to a 0 - 5k ohms range in use.

Did You do this on a 0-5kΩ throttle Controller or on a 3-wire Club car setup?

Since the 3-wire setup is a voltage divider you will only get about 1/4 throttle voltage signal on the wiper wire if you use a 0-20k pot.

Hate to be cynical but could you just put a block of wood under the gas pedal for the time being to limit travel for added safety?

Don't think would work. He said you press the pedal part way down and it does nothing until you get so far. A block of wood might not let you get to the starting point which is too fast when it starts. Needs to find out what has happen to the first part of the go.
