12volt winch

The Lynx cart I just got, has an old Warn winch on it. In preliminary inspection it appears it has the positive connected to one battery and the ground connected to another battery. Is that the best/only way to be wired, or is it possible/better to connect to a 12volt reducer?

Looking at the specifications of a modern small Warn 12V winch (e.g. 9000lb) they pull between 100 and 500 amps and require a battery with at least 650 CCA (Cold Cranking Amps). I don't know what size your winch is but I imagine it will have similar figures.

There is no way a Voltage reducer will give you anything like that power (they are normally a max of 30 amps) and connecting the winch to part of the battery pack will ruin the pack quick time.

I suggest that the only way to run a winch such as that is to have a separate 12V battery, with sufficient CCA, that is designed to run a winch.

That is kinda what I was thinking Yawood, but did not know if they made a higher amp reducer or not. The winch is small, just 2000.

A 2000 lb. winch is ok for a golf cart. Probably way more than you would ever need. All you need is a motorcycle battery or any gel cell with at least 20 aH capacity to run it for hunting purposes. BTDT

I was searching winches not too long ago and noticed Warn makes 48v winches for the Polaris Ranger EV. I'm not sure of the specifics on them though.

The only reason there is a winch on this cart is because it was there when I bought it. Kinda leery of extra 'drag' on the batteries, when a manual comealong will usually work.

I had a winch on my first cart and was doing a lot of off road. When I knew I was going off road I would just throw a jump box in the bagwell so if I needed the winch it was instantly usable .
