'92 DS New to me and I have questions
Hi there, as a Christmas present, my wife gave me a '92 DS 36 Volt electric cart (She knows I like challenges) that has been sitting for awhile and from what I can tell is stock. When I went to pick it up the previous owner said "The batteries are not in great shape" After airing up the tires, we pushed the cart up on the trailer and I brought it home. After downloading the electrical schematic and doing some preliminary checks, it appeared there had been some creative rewiring. The Positive cable from the charging plug was connected to the + terminal of battery #1, but the negative was connected + terminal of battery #4. After checking the batteries, I found that batteries 4, 5 and 6 were bad with dead cells. I also discovered that batteries 1, 2 and 3 were very low on water. I figured that with the charging cables connected the way they were I should probably replace all the batteries since they are connected in series. Today I installed new batteries and connected the the negative cable from the charging port to the NEG terminal of Battery #6 and the positive from the charging port to the POS terminal of Battery #1. I connected the charger and it started charging, reading 10 Amps on the dial. I did smell the hydrogen gas and saw the bubbles in all the cells. I have the Accu Power #13400 36 Volt charger. My question is what should the voltage read while charging measured from positive to negative while charging? I measured 44 VDC with my Fluke DVM during the short time (1-2 Minutes) I had the charger connected. I just don't want to cook my new batteries. I'm new to the carts so I'm sure I'll have more questions. Thanks in advance.

Re: '92 DS New to me and I have questions
I think the voltage sounds about right but have not fooled with a 36 volt lately. Should be a chart in here.
Is it a resistor cart? to BGW. |

I will get to 45-46 volts or so before it shuts down. That reading is completely normal.

Re: '92 DS New to me and I have questions
Thanks for the quick replies! It is a resistor cart with no mods that I can see. I'm pretty sure that the next thing I am going t look at is the VGlide assembly to see what condition the brush is in. Then check all the connections to the resistors. I may be looking at putting a motor controller on to replace the resistors. I have ordered a voltage reducer since I am going to be adding lights eventually.
