2001 48V Carryall 2... this slow?
Hey folks,
Just trying to do a "check" here. I know my way around my gas carryall quite well, but I'm not super familiar with how an electric one "should" behave. Short background, know nothing on the history of this cart. I bought it from an auction, and it appears to have been very well maintained (mechanically, not aesthetically). For the time being, I bought a cheap 5A charger and have been disconnecting the battery pack from the cart to charge it until I can get a real charger this weekend. Works fine, just takes forever. Cart appears to have july 2017 batteries, AC Delco, 170 hour, looks like good batteries. After resting for a day, pack voltage is around 51.5ish volts. (this may improve with a real charger...) It drives great. I drove it 6 or 7 miles over the weekend, and resting voltage was still close to 51 volts. While driving, pedal to the floor, it never drops below 48 volts, so I'm assuming the batteries are healthy. All of the battery cables are 1/0 AWG cables. My question is, this thing is painfully slow. stock 18" tires decent shape, around 20psi. Driving through my property (mowed grass, and soft ground) it runs around 8-9mph through the grass. When I get to the areas we drive on and the dirt is packed harder, it'll get up to around 10mph but barely. I did take it out on the dirt road at the end of my property and got it to hold 11-12mph pretty steady, though if I hit a sandy spot or a hill it seems to struggle a bit (drops to 8-9mph) and then picks back up again once i'm past it. Even when struggling, my fluke never drops below around 48.5ish volts. It has the green label curtis controller and 3.1hp special service motor. IT has no other issues other than being frustratingly slow. Runs very strong and torquey otherwise. IS this normal? or is there something i'm missing here? I'm about to cut a hole through the floorboard and go fred flintstone style to help it out. |

Re: 2001 48V Carryall 2... this slow?
Update: I charged it yesterday, and unplugged the charger last night around 11pm. I went out a few minutes ago (cart sat for around 13 hours after I unplugged the charger) and it was at 51.96v. I also tested specific gravity a couple days ago, every cell in every battery was good, right where it should be.
Here is a quick video, I shut up so you can hear the cart/motor best as I could capture. Clearly, it goes much quicker on the hard packed area than it does going through my front yard. Going up a hill or through sandy sections of my dirt road is about the same as going through the grass... it's really slow. At least compared to my gas powered turf 2 it's a HUGE difference. And I though my gas one was relatively slow compared to my G9 (although perfectly adequate for anything I will ever need) Pedal was to the floor the entire video |

I wonder what the gear ratio is of the rear end, maybe they used different gears from the regular DS?

It says in the owner's manual 12-14mph is specified speed. But I don't know under what conditions that is in. It will do 12-13mph on flat level asphalt... just not in the grass, or up hills, etc. I just want to make sure that there isn't anything abnormal. Everything else seems to be nice and tight and well taken care of. I've read they're slow, but a real workhorse. But some people here think 20mph is slow lol. I'm just not familiar enough with electric carts to know normal vs. bad. |

Tahoedawg would probably know. He seems to know everything about CCs. Maybe send him a private message.

This is not uncommon for a series car. They're just SLOW. You may have some worn accelerator linkage issues that may be keeping your throttle from going up to 100%. Otherwise, it seems to be behaving normally. Club Car's 48 Volt series cars were built for torque and not speed. The 12-14MPH claim was taken right out of the book for a DS golf car with the same drive system. A Carryall 2 is considerably heavier and may not be quite as "peppy"

Re: 2001 48V Carryall 2... this slow?
Thanks guys.
It's not so much the overall speed (or lack thereof) but the noticeable "struggle" where it loses 1-2mph as soon as I leave hard pack road and go into softer terrain, even though battery voltage seems great when it happens. Luke, I completely believe you. It's just the "bogging down" that has me questioning the cart. If that's normal and expected behavior, then I guess I'm good to go. :) |

I don't know, the voltage is not dropping indicating a Series Motor over loaded, it is more like a current limiting situation.
Make sure the FNR, Solenoid and none of the cables are getting hot after You drive for a while. Try to measure the voltage from Controller B+ to M- as you are traveling Full Speed. |
