Default Cart sways sporadically

Hey All,

I have recently been trying to upgrade my 2004 CC precedent. I have installed a 6” RHOX drop spindle lift with 12” tires. I have also upgraded both front and rear leaf springs to the heavy duty springs, and replaced the front control arms and tie rods. I have a positive chamber of 1/2” with my toe set in to 1/8”.

As soon as I start driving especially with any weight on it my alignment goes way off and the cart starts to swerve left and right. I’m at a loss for what to do. I’ve went back over everything I’ve replaced to make sure everything is tight.

It’s an old cart that I got from my dad that spent years just sitting out in the open. Is it the drop spindle lift? What other factors could cause this problem?

Thanks for any help you can give

Chris

How much weight?
Where is the weight?

Drop spindle lifts are not great for stability at speed, but there are other factors that can have a big effect as well.
Worn control arm bushings, bent control arms, a bent frame or cracked welds that let the frame flex more than it should. Worn out shocks can also cause some issues.

What size and kind of tires? What air pressure are they?

Drop spindle lifts offer the least amount of adjustment of all the lift kits. Sounds like you’re side to side adjustment is off. That kind of adjustment can easily be eye balled. Start with the side that has the most adjustment in the steering arm; take the arm loose from the spindle and get the wheel straight and then adjust the arm out to fit back into the spindle. Then do the same thing with the opposite tire getting as close to straight as possible. That should get you close enough to where you can make the minor adjustments with a 12 mm wrench on either steering arm. Take it for a test drive and if that does the trick just remove the steering wheel then position it straight up and re-attach it. Hope this helps

Yes also definitely check all your bushings as worn or missing bushings can throw things off considerably as well as shocks.

Worn, under inflated, and mis-matched tires can have a huge effect on these.

I have Arisun X-Trail tires. 23x10.5x12. Air pressure is 19 psi.

I have a rear mad Jax’s flipseat on back. Weight is from two adults and 4 small kids.

The front shocks haven’t been replaced but I have replaced all the bushings when I installed the new leaf springs and front control arms.

I did what you recommended but something is still throwing it out of alignment when I drive it. I believe I did have my tie rods too far up the steering arm which was causing it to toe in really bad but now that I’ve adjusted the tie rods it’s still losing alignment really fast, this time it’s toed out.

The bushing around my shocks are really worn as well as the shocks I think. They are the only thing I haven’t replace along with the whole steering arm and column. I’ve ordered new shocks and will have them on by the end of the week.

If you’re sure the control arms aren’t bent then keep adjusting on the steering box arm till you get it right; the arms take a 12mm wrench to turn and make sure you’re tightening the retaining nut before taking a test ride. Sometimes it can take a few test rides to completely dial the front end right.

Did you ever figure this out? I have a RXV with a 6 inch lift and the people who built it can’t seem to fix it. They even slowed it down from 25 mph to 20mph.
