98 Club Car, charger pegged out?

98 Club Car, 48 volt, has the tow/run switch under the seat and the forward/reverse are buttons if that makes any difference. My mom bought this cart just a few weeks ago from a golf cart dealer, has 2018 batteries. It hasnt been used enough to run the charger but she is looking to sell so i brought to my house. It still runs fine but plugged charger in and its pegged out, wide open. I left it that way for an hour or so and it turned itself off. Checked batteries with tester and they all show just over 6 volts- obviously not fully charged . I read about resetting the OBC so I tried that, and now the charger wont come on at all but cart still runs great.Worst case I take back to the dealer but he's an hour away. Thanks in advance if anybody has something to try.

Charger is a Power drive 3 , model 26560

** and i did try different outlets as well as plugging in power tools so outlets are good. Fuse in yellow case good. Also, no clicks or anything audible when i plug into cart/outlet. Would resetting OBC have anything to do with it? maybe I need to reset again?

Batteries should be charged after every use regardless of how much it was used. Lead acid batteries will be damaged by leaving them in a partially discharged state for long periods.

There's a breaker on the front of the charger, make sure that isn't tripped. The button turns white if it's popped out.

Check on the cart that the main positive charge lead from the receptacle to the battery is in good condition at both ends. Verify with a voltmeter that battery voltage is present at the charge receptacle. The bottom right pin should show 48+. If the voltage is below about 40v the pack voltage is too low to turn the charger on, and it will either need to be bypassed or the batteries will need to be charged individually with a 12v charger to bring the voltage up.


With the charger cover off, ac power cord UNPLUGGED. Plug the DC charge cord into the cart. Check for 48V reaching the red wire on the ammeter, and then on the white and blue wires at the relay. If you have voltage on the white wire, but not on the blue wire, the relay may have failed, and will need to be tested further.

If you have no voltage on those points inside the charger there is a connection issue in the charge cord. If you have at least 48V on all three of those points, the OBC may have failed. Further testing will determine that by checking the wiring for the OBC, or by bypassing the OBC to attempt to force the charger to run.

Batteries showing just over 6 volts. If they are 8 volt batteries they are dead. If they are 6 volt batteries you need 8 of them to make 48 volts. 3 caps is 6 volts 4 caps is 8 volt. Just to be sure what you have.

Definitely has (6) four hole top 8 volt batteries , still runs great with tons of power but at their current state with charger not working , they are showing 6 volts on an analog battery tester. First time even charging ( or attempting to charge i should say) the cart since mom bought it so im assuming thats why they arent showing 8?

its never been run besides the guys unloading off the trailer a few weeks ago so thought id charge it up for kids today. Thats when i noticed charger pegged out. Ill check tomorrow on lunch with a meter, i appreciate your help. I reset charger earlier when it was pegged out , didnt help. Then i went through the OBC reset and ever since then the charger wont do a thing. No noises, no nothing. Pulled cover off in hopes of finding something obvious but no luck .

Use a 12 volt car charger on each battery for about 10 minutes then try your cart charger. You don't have to unhook any cables just put charger clamps on positive and negative of each battery.

put 10 amps to one of the batteries for about 15 minutes, still reads just over 6 volts so not sure . Not the end of the world but very frustrating..but like i said, it still runs very strong even in the grass so its not weak or anything

The voltage has to be above so much to get the cart charger to work. If you have a meter charge each battery to over 7 volts.

Are you sure your meter is accurate?

What are you describing as "pegged out?"

As Mooncarter asks, I'm sure your meter is inaccurate. If it is not a digital meter, or a cheap one, you really don't know what you have in each battery.

Use a quality digital voltmeter and you can be sure the readings are accurate. I'm sure you have over 8 volts per battery and over 48 volts across the pack.
