Charging Problem

Hi! I am new to electric carting. Just bought a 48v Club Car. I couldn't get the charger to work so I bought a new one.

Dumb!!!

I then read that the batteries have to have a certain amount of charge to get the charger to kick on. My question is how much of a charge do the batteries need? I have 6- 8V Trojan PowerDrive batteries.

The individual baterry volts are:

3.59 3.18 4.25
5.29 4.20 2.43

From Trojan Battery Website:
State of charge as related to specific gravity and open circuit voltage

Percentage of Charge, Specific Gravity Corrected to 80o F, Open-Circuit Voltage 8V Battery

100% 8.49, 90% 8.41, 80% 8.33, 70% 8.25, 60% 8.16, 50% 8.07, 40% 7.97, 30% 7.88, 20% 7.77, 10% 7.67

It sounds like it's time for some new batteries! Trojan recommends to take your batteries down to no more then 50% to maximize their life and no more then 20% at any one time. Your batteries are far past that at this time.

You could try disconnecting the battery pack and individually charging the 8v batteries with a 20a 12v automotive charger for about an hour each to give them a little kick in the pants. Then measure the voltage on each battery, if they are close to chargeable, reinstall in the cart and see if the charger brings them up to charged status.

Thanks guys! I know I'll need new batteries soon either way. I just can't afford them right now. I'll try charging them individually to see if I can get by for a little while.

What voltage do I need for the charger to kick on?

I don't have info on the charger and someone with knowledge can add comments but I would think all the batteries would have to be at least 7.5 volts each before they will take a charge.

It's a Thunderbull Charger.

Hello All, I'm having the same problem with my 48v. My batteries were not as low. 7.77 was the lowest one.

At what voltage do you think the charger will kick back on to begin charging?

Should I get all my bats to at least 8.15 or higher.

I replaced all the batteries and now I have a new problem. I hooked up all the batteries and the cart still wont go. The headlights come on and if I plug the charger in it kicks on. I do hear a click when I hit the gas pedal. Could it be a wiring problem?

This is way too much amperage for a 12v charger on an 8 volt battery for this long
Too bad you did not use the search feature on the site. You could have easily found that the charger was good with those voltages and the $400 would have gone a long way towards new batteries.....

I urge every one new to golf carts to use the search and research before you buy! .... good luck with this
