1999 DS 48v - Its upgrade time!

Hello all,

I am a new user to the site, and semi-new to golf carts. Ive been driving these things since I dont know when and just love em. This year it was decided that it is time for me to own my own cart. I purchased a 48v - 1999 Club Car DS and am committed to making this thing awesome.

Everything currently works on the cart. The charger charges the 8V batteries automatically to appx 8.4v a piece, which is great. The current top speed is 12 mph, but lets change that.

After getting the cart home and giving it a look, it came to my attention that it needed ball joints, upgraded heavy duty leaf springs to help accommodate the rear facing seat, as well as shocks, brake pads, etc. All of that has been ordered as well as 14"/23" Rims and Tires, as well as a 6" lift kit.

After researching some, it became apparent that if I were to upgrade the tire size, I would want to also upgrade the voltage controller. This is why I have come to this site for advice, where to start.

So, asking the pros that have done all this before. Where is the bang for my buck? I dont see much of an issue upgrading everything if I have to, but if I were to go steps at a time, where would I begin?

What parts are necessary to get more of a top end increase, but also a reasonable torque increase?

This cart is sitting on all stock parts including motor, voltage controller, solenoid, etc.

I have same cart
Was 12 mph,
1st:
New#4 cables,
Adj “V-glide”, high end was a tad off .
...
2nd:
put in a 36 v Motor,
got 18-19 mph & good uphill torque.
...
3rd:
Recent 20.5” tires, over 20mph now.
(Treads on here somewhere)

Upgrade cables a must
Best bang for $$$, is upgrade the motor.

That is correct, it is a Series cart

silly question, if he has a 48 volt cart why use a 36 volt motor? Sorry I am not versed in the electric cart world

As you probably already read there with a series cart the power to the motor goes through every component and cable each time you press the gas. All of these components have to be rated for the task at hand. So first you have to establish what that task is in terms of cart modifications and use.
Are you planning big tires?
Off road use in Mud, sand, or steep hills?
Road use with high speed required or 4 big guys and a full cooler?

Already ordered up some 14"/23" Rims/Tires, with a 6" lift kit. I really like how that looks.

My main usage is for Campgrounds, and Disc/Golf Courses. Mainly it is level ground, either grass or pavement. There are plenty of hills on some courses, but mainly looking for higher top end, and a little torque to go with it.

So yeah, road use with 4 passengers and most definitely a full cooler.

I think you need one of the big PlumQuick motors. Then all the stuff to feed it... Alltrax SR48600, MZJ400, 2g cable set, and HD F&R or SW202 kit.

Thats kind of what I figured, just wasnt sure. Seems I can get most of that, if not all from EVDrives. Should I be looking elsewhere?
