Build or Buy
Hello, I am hoping to get some opinions. In December I purchased an 03 Club Car DS 48v. It is all stock, with the exception of a rear seat, and HD rear springs (that i installed). It runs great on flat surfaces, but of course with the stock motor doesn't have much power on hills. The problem is most of the campgrounds that I like to go to have hills. I was considering upgrading to an Alltrax controller and new motor. I stopped at a local golf cart parts dealer who sells these, he recommended that I just stop where I am at, sell the cart and start looking for something newer/more powerful (he suggested an EzGo RXV). So is he right? Will some of the newer models come stock with more power or am I better off building what I have? If it makes a difference, I believe I can get at least as much money out of it as I paid for it. I appreciate your input.

Re: Build or Buy
If it's in good shape I would build it. I love how the DS rides, smooth like a cadillac. I've never ridden in an ezgo that rides as nice. I believe many here will agree.
Personally, I'd build it. You could upgrade everything to make it an absolute beast for half of what it'll cost you for a new cart. I'm assuming this is a series cart. If you can find a good 36V motor from a DS, it will bolt right in and give you a pretty considerable upgrade. But, most of the 36V motors i've seen used are either trashed, or expensive. For about $100 more you can get an Admiral or PQ motor that is brand new and will outperform the 36V motor. you could spend $5-6k (or more) on a new stock cart with no mods. It'll do better than your DS currently does, but only marginally. or for about ~2k you can upgrade the motor, controller, solenoid, HD FNR switch, and wires and have a beast that will run circles around that brand new stock cart. And you would have the option of picking speed, torque, or upgrade it to suit your needs and perform however you would like it to. just my opinion anyway :) |

Re: Build or Buy
I have a 2003 IQ cart. Getting speed is easy with a high speed magnet, but getting torque is a bigger deal from what I have read. I'm under the impression that a bigger controller is needed, is that correct?

Re: Build or Buy
Yes this is true. The speed magnet essentially prohibits the controller from restricting your speed. It does nothing for adding power. It just allows the car to run at it's full potential, which is usually about 20-22 MPH on level ground.

I have a 2006 CC DS IQ. http://www.revolutiongolfcars.com/ Set me up with a D&D motor and new cables. Best money I ever spent on the cart. All the speed and power that I need. Go with Dave at revolution golf carts you can’t go wrong.

Re: Build or Buy
With a speed magnet you should be able to get 13mph uphill. That's what my IQ did.
