Default Power Drive charger not working 95ClubCar 48V.

I have a Club car serial number A9531-44-9013 and a pwer drive charger. I usually would leave the charger on most always, but had it off the cart for past month. When I plug in to wall 110V and the cart charger plug, I get nothing at all..no start or hum or anything. The batteries are about 2-3 year old. Haven't checked them individually for their voltage. But didn't know if there was a reset for the charger. There is a clear fuse cover with a wire of fairly large diameter that is ok and near the bottom right side near the cord is a 15amp switch or rocker switch, but I couldn't get it to do anything. Any one have an idea what I should be doing first? it still has enough charge to drive lively but the red light comes on from time to time (battery) in center of dash. I am disabled so hard for me to work on this, but if someone would point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it! there are 6 eight volt batteries in it. I do have an analog multimeter, and a 12 V car and motorcycle charger that will charge at 2 amps for small batteries and regular (10 amps?) charge rate and will deep charge if set to. Is this really a battery issue or the charger (which I find is extremely expensive) Thanks in advance. bigdad

Welcome to BGW bigdad!

It's a battery issue...
Your battery voltages are to low for the charger to come on!

It's to my understanding (but, have never tried it...)
that you can use a 12V charger on your 8V batteries... individually,
but, only for an hour or so, at a shot, to bring your voltages up enough so your cart charger will kick in!

Before you do that though... check your individual battery voltages with your meter FIRST,
8V or less on each battery, you'll need to bring it/them up
(I think) 8.6 volts on each battery, should be enough for the OBC to kick on the cart charger!

(Insert discalaimer here)

That's right you can use a 12v charger as long as it has a LOW setting of 2 amps...The battery needs to be monitored for excessive heat and voltage..... insert 2 disclaimers here

Scotty,
Could he force charge the batts. by bypassing the relay on the charger, if he monitored it closey...or bad idea?

IMO...
Messing/bypassing the relay on the charger shouldn't have to be done in this situation...

Bringing up the voltages with his 12V charger (at 2 Amps) might be easier...

Again... IMO... (and Disclaimer... )

thank you guys for the info. I will check the battery voltages individually and if below the level noted will just put the 12 V charger on each that is low at the low 2 amp motorcycle charge rate and monitor the temp and any increase in voltage and if successful I guess I should just always leave the charger plugged in! I had been alternating leaving it plugged in and not, thinking that a continuous plug in would be damaging...I got it just backwards!!! thks again.....bigdad

thanks for the previous advice. I charged each battery at the 2 amp setting....they were all at about 7.8V. I got each one up to 8.6 V and then plugged in the charger. Nothing happened it wouldn't kick in. It took about 80 minutes per battery to bring up to the 8.6V so. Anything else that I should check or replace in the charger itself, like a starting capacitor or something? Who would service this kind of item? I am in the Knoxville TN area. Many thanks as this is very frustrating, I use the cart with my disability....thks again bigdad

thks Lockman , left another message and did charge the batteries per some suggestion...they started all about the same at 7.8V each and I did the 2 amp thing for about 80 min per pattery and got them to 8.6V each...Charger still didn't kick in, so I think somethings wrong in the Charger, as batteries were reasonably good and showed slow discharge, but evenly. If you can find time to point me in the right direction, it shore would help. thanks bigdad Please read my last post....

Well... It could be a number of things now...

1) Your OBC (On Board Computer) is bad

2) The charger plug connections (on the cart, in the battery bay) could be loose or corroded

or yes...

3) The relay or the recifier, in the charger could be bad!

Now it's just a process of elimintation...
