Default Battery pack “Boiling”?

Recently bought a 95 DS with six-8V, 5 yr old Trojans.
When charging, the batteries make a “Boiling” sound.
Is this normal?
My newer EZGO with newer batteries makes no noise when charging.

Thanks 👍

It depends. Some slight bubbling is normal. Which charger do you have? Does the cart have an OBC?
If they sound like they’re on a full on rolling boil, it can either be due to low pack voltage which is keping the charger running too long, or if it has an OBC the OBC could be charging incorrectly or it could have failed.

Check the voltage of each battery several times during charging and see if they are all rising in voltage at the same rate. Then check voltage after the pack has been sitting at least 12 hours after charging. Take the cart for a drive, maybe 30-45 minutes if possible, and then recheck voltage on all batteries to see if any one or two have lower voltage than the rest. That would indicate the pack is out of balance, and that will affect the way it charges.

And the older the batteries are the harder they charge and more reaction (boiling) is observed due to length of time it take to recharge. It will usually precipitate more acid mist as this occurs. 5 years old and unknown condition is a lot....

My last set of US Batteries were 10 yrs old and sounded like a pressure cooker the last couple of months....

Thanks for the info.
I have the standard Power Drive Club Car charger and my cart has an OBC.
5 batteries are about 8.3V and 1 is about 7.7V resting.
I live in a hilly neighborhood and the pack voltage drops to 38V on the steepest hills.

8.3 is not bad, but it's not great.
7.7 is dead.
I'd recommend a new set of batteries.

My last set of 8 year old Interstates gassed like crazy, even while not charging, about the last 3 years I had them. Even to the point I was frequently cleaning the tops off and adding water and posted concerns about it here also. Now with new US Batteries no puddling on the tops, nothing under the cart to catch acid and no watering (yet). Oh and my battery tray had caught hell too.

And hopefully it will be that way for many years, but there will come a point when they charge harder and longer due to cell degradation and that is when it will occur. I kept mine no more 1/4" above the plates and the caps heavily vented and it helped the most.

That battery is definitely your issue on the drop. If you are tight for funds right now, see if you can find a single good used battery of the same or similar state and use it as a replacement to get you by until you can replace the pack. You are better off with one good used battery in there then leaving the one you have now which has a bad cell. Just do not waste money on a single new battery.
