1999 DS 48V with 14" rims will not move
I decided to upgrade a 1999 DS 48v with some parts, so I ordered em up and am still waiting on the motor. Since the Motor wasnt gonna show up for a while, I figured Id get jump on installing parts, so I redid the cables, and installed the HD f/r and HD solenoid. As well as a 6" lift with 14" Rims.
After that I threw the charger on it, and it takes but only for a minute or so, then clicks off, and the battery light on the cart comes on soon as it kicks off. I assume this means it either cant charge, or its fully charged. Checked the pack and its almost 51v, seems fully charged. And now to my actual question. I believe I read somewhere that if you put 14" rims on this cart with the stock motor and parts, the cart wont run well. Well at this point I believe that because when I push the gas pedal whether in F or R, the cart jumps maybe an inch, and thats it. Is this by design, or do I have other issues? I wouldve thought for sure this thing would at least move, but might have very little torque. |

Re: 1999 DS 48V with 14" rims will not move
Updating my own post after doing some charging troubleshooting. I didnt think it was necessary to run the ground through the OBC, oh how wrong I was. I added 2G throughout, and like many others put the ends on first and couldnt get it through the OBC so like so many others I just bypassed it.
I have since remedied that, cut off the connector, slid it through and then crimped a new connector. Seems like it wants to charge much better now. I still cannot imagine a low charge is the culprit, but hey, Ive been wrong plenty of times before. |

You have that corrected, but will it move now? Your scenario described sounds like a lack of solenoid closure....

Re: 1999 DS 48V with 14" rims will not move
after checking voltages, I have to assume this solenoid is bad out of the box. I cannot imagine installation failed it.
I check the post coming from the hot battery bank, almost 60v. But even with the cart key off, and nothing engaged, I see the same voltage on the other side like it is stuck closed. Whats up with that? |

Re: 1999 DS 48V with 14" rims will not move
and looking even further, and checking schematics, I might have found the issue.
On the small posts with the diode, it wants to be mounted with the stripe to the left post when facing then solenoid. That is mounted correct, but there are 3 additional wires connected to those posts. I had read that polarity didnt matter there, and you could connect any of the +/- wires to either of those posts. I checked Plum Quicks site which has some schems also, and for the MZJ-400A solenoid, it looks like 2 of those wires have to be mounted on the stripe side of the diode. I currently have the white/black and red wires on the right side, and a yellow one on the left, which is stripe side of the diode. So whats the word there? Need to flip those two over to the left post, or does it matter? |

Re: 1999 DS 48V with 14" rims will not move
The MZJ400A is not polarity specific. You can choose the right or left small post for positive or negative wires. The diode is polarity sensitive. The striped end MUST face the terminal with the + wire on it.
Do you have a voltmeter? Can you check and see if you have 48v between the 2 small solenoid posts when you try to go and the solenoid fails to click? |

Ive got the hot from the pack going to point #2. So you are saying the diode stripe end should be mounted to point A2?

Re: 1999 DS 48V with 14" rims will not move
I got anxious waiting for a reply, lol. Checked other schems, read the same thing, but thought they were talking about the small wires. Soon as I flipped that diode, I got movement!
Now to charge these batteries, and see what happens. Ill go take it for a rip quick though, make sure stuff is in order before I give final approval. |
