Default 48V Meter on lesser voltage cart

I’m hoping my thinking is correct on this one. But can I throw a 48v digital meter on a 36V cart that I’m planning to jump to 42 or 48V in the future? Wouldn’t it just read out 36.x volts instead of 48? Not going with one of the percentage or analog meters.

The meter you want should have a range higher and lower than what you are going to be using it on. A typical 36-48v digital meter will have a range of 25-100 volts

Was looking at your meters ScottyB, would I get a very accurate reading running the pos lead right to the key? Feel like it would be better at the pack but would be illuminated full time.

Yes and yes. The reading is accurate at the key but it may read a half a volt lower than the pack. Confirm & compensate for this difference if you want to draw the pack right down to the discharge limit.
Personally - I like it on the safe side so reading 0.5v low consistently is alright for me. I typically recharge at 49.5v
The most accurate pack value is displayed when the meter is connected directly to the pack - when there is no keyswitch loss.

These meters will work at 36v now and 48v later.

Awesome, thanks. Had the feeling I was overthinking this.
