36v Batteries Running a 48v Motor

Purchased a used 95 Club Car couple years ago and now the motor died. Discovered that my 36v batteried cart is actually driving a 48v motor. What is the danger in replacing with another 48v motor? Would seem to make more sense replacing with 36v but would it mate up with the existing transmission?

The motor should match the voltage, period. Surprised it lasted so long! Under the correct voltage that motor would have lasted 30 yrs or better......

Is the cart set up for 48V and they had put 6 6volt batteries in it or was it set up for 36V and they had put in a 48volt motor? Need more info.

Appears the cart was originally 48v. I say this because the 36v batteries were fairly new and they jury rigged the charger connection. It was cut from the standard plug fitting next to the gear shift and now has a separte plug that I need to lift the seat and connect to the 36v charger. My guess, the 48v batteries died, prior owner had 36v available and a charger and just rigged it up. I have no clue how long it ran this way before I bought it about two years ago.

Well you could run either system as they made that cart in both voltages...
But you need to make sure everything is matched up voltage wise. There are solenoids and possibly controllers involved? You never did tell whether it was a coil cart or controller system? If a complete change to 36v was done correctly except the motor then I would go with a good used 36v motor. And change the plug so you don't have to raise the seat to charge. Would make the cart worth more to the next guy!

Thanks. If I install a 36v club car motor will it mate to the existing transmission? Your question about coil or controller, I don't know. It's a 95. How do I tell? Obviously I'm still in learning mode here. Thanks.

Either motor will bolt onto that differential just fine.
