Question about Multiple wires melted

Looking for some pointers. New to golf carts. A friend of mine has a 1988 DS electric and while driving it had a bad burning smell. Looking under the seat they found multiple wires from the FNR switch, battery wires, and motor wires were burning. Wondering if one or multiple bad batteries would cause that. Unfortunately I was not around when the issue happened so I'm just working off information given. It has been sitting since the fall and only 3 batteries show low voltage. The other 3 read less then 1 volt. Any information is much appreciated. Thanks, Nick

Yes, as motor voltage and speed decrease, motor amp draw INcreases. The amperage can get high enough to melt even brand new cables.

It needs a new battery pack and ALL new cables at the very least. Now might be a good time to upgrade to 48V and a solid state controller setup like the Alltrax SR.

Thanks. I tested the motor. I had no continuity between either A or either S so I'm assuming the motor did not cause the issue. How can I test the FNR switch, solenoids and batteries? Thanks again, Nick

You already tested the batteries. 3 of them show less than 1 volt. For all intents, those are gone, and probably the original cause. The other 3 will not be far behind. Replace the whole pack.

FNR switch depends if it got hot enough to melt. It can usually be disassembled to check the contacts and make sure none are pitted or corroded.

If you upgrade the rest of the drive system a new FNR switch would be a good idea.
