Batteries Gassing/leaking during charge?
I have 4x12V trojans in my DS...most of the time after I fill up the water to just above the separator bar in each cell - when the battery is done charging there is ether mist/damp on the top of the battery and in some cases pooling.
Now I've never watered unless they were fully charged so I don't believe it's overfilling due to that, and I don't overfill in general as its to the top of the separator bar. I'm wondering if its either: a) I live in an extremely hot and humid climate (80% humidity, dew point at 75-80 degrees F). I wonder if this is just gas condensing as they charge? b) My battery caps are the long plastic pop off/on things - not individual cell screw plugs - maybe they just are old and worn out? Batteries are 3/4 years old I think. Appreciate any thoughts on this. Using the stock charger, OBC is NOT bypassed. |

You may be adding too much water. Trojan recommends the water level be only about 1/4" above the tops of the plates. If the water is up to the bottom of the fill hole you will get moisture venting while charging no matter which batteries you have.

Also something I have learned is if you lift the seat so air can flow you get less moisture on your batteries.

Re: Batteries Gassing/leaking during charge?
I have attached the most recent Trojan watering recommendations for your reference.
It is best to keep the electrolyte level just below the bottom of the sight well. Your battery plates should ALWAYS be covered. It is not unusual for some battery caps to puddle acid during charging ... here is another possible solution: http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/elect...tery-caps.html Trojan Electrolyte Level.JPG |
