Default Early 95 DS 48v V-Glide POT

Early 1995 48v V-Glide throttle. Same as used on early to mid 90's 36 volt carts.

The one in the cart seems to be DOA. Needs to be repaired/replaced.

I have another, but bench testing shows OL to almost immediate 5k, then transitions evenly to 10k when all the way up.

I have verified this with 2 meters. One I thought had to be lying and a new one I bought today.

Isn't that supposed to be a 0-5k ohm? Did you check your resistors individually on the back?

Yes it is supposed to be 0-5K. No I have not looked at the resistors. I'm pretty sure I took this out of a 36v series controller cart.

That is a 0-5k Ohm 2-wire MSP. I would remove each and clean all of the surfaces and then verify their integrity and resistances. Here is a value chart.

If you are not used to it, then best to take a picture so you are comfortable with the reassembly. Take off all the nuts, remove the resistor(s), clean the eyelets and visually inspect that there is no damage to the resistor. Often you will find one popped away from the porcelain, but you can't tell until removed. Once the integrity is verified, get your DVM/VOM and set it to Ohms and then test each resistor. To understand the color code and value assignment you read the first three stripes to find the value (ohms). The first and second stripes are single digits; the third is the number of zeroes that follow the first two numbers or the multiplier factor. Match the numbers with the colors: black is 0, brown is 1, red is 2, orange is 3, yellow is 4, green is 5, blue is 6, violet is 7, gray is 8, and white is 9.

The fourth stripe shows the diode or resistor's accuracy tolerance: Gold indicates +/-5%; silver is +/-10%. If there is no fourth stripe, the tolerance rating is +/-20%. The accuracy tolerance rating means that a certain percentage of power above or below the diode/resistor's rating can go through without affecting the unit.

Once this is all done, verify the wires, contact pads and then adjust the wiper arm during reassembly.

I have attached a 4-band color code chart for your reference.

Is there a 5kΩ resistor spliced inline in that black wire?

The lever arm should also be depressing the micro-switch in the rest position.

Great info Nole, thank you. Lots of carts still around using these MSP's. (Mostly 36 volt of course) Can we make this a sticky?
