Default 1998 Club Car Electric Charging Issues

Hello,

I am new to this forum, glad I found it! I am hoping I can get some help with my 1998 Club Card DS golf cart. I bought 6 8v Duracell batteries for my golf cart in 2016. When I put them in, the golf cart worked great. However, as time progressed the golf cart started dying a lot sooner. In 2017, the golf cart would work but it would die even sooner, even after (what I thought) was a full charge. In 2018, I could not use the golf cart. I left it out under a carport over the year, the batteires disconnected. Now, I am trying to revive the cart. While I though I did, I am having issues again with charging. In order to revive the golf cart, I charged each battery individually, usually up to 7.9v per battery, added water (they were low) and connectec the charger. At first, the charger worked, it would click on and go to 15amps and gradually go down. When I tested my batteires, they read 46.7 volts, which should be enough for the OBC to tell the charger to kick on. However, now the charger clicks on, but the ammeter stays on zero. Since the batteries are not charging with the golf cart charger, I have to manually charge each battery seperately. I have the PowerDrive DS golf cart with the OBC and a DPI charger, bought on amazon. I bought a 48volt 15amp Golf Cart Power Supply charger with Club car 3-pin round connector.

I have replaced battery wires and also replaced one bad battery this year. I was hoping this would help my charging issue. I am guessing my OBC is bad, the cart when full runs perfectly fine, the only problem seems to be charging. Unfortunately, I do not have any history on the cart, so I am not sure the OBC the original from 1998.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks

Charger clicking but no charging current could be the fuse on the negative wire in the receptacle.

Check the fuse part #6 in the diagram below first:

Thanks for the quick response!

I visible checked for a broken/burnt fuse and also did a continuity test with my multimeter, both looked good. However, since they are cheap, I will replace the 3/8 amp fuse and see if that helps.

The 3/8" fuse is item #9 and it is fine if the charger relay is clicking.

I am referring to the high current fuse #6.

What is the voltage if you insert your meter in the front of the cart receptacle + and - sockets?

Just wanted to chime in. I’m putting a Club Car DS from scratch. After wiring up all electronics, it was time to test all components. I ran into the same issue with my charging system. Charger would click on with a battery bank voltage of 48.3v but ammeter would not click on. Checked both fuses on receptacle as well as wiring. Made a jumper from the receptacles black negative leg directly to the negative post of the battery bank. This bypasses the OBC. Connected the charger, works fine. Before junking the OBC, I decided to go through the OBC resetting procedure that Tahoedawg had posted in a separate topic. Good thing I did cause that fixed the issue. I think my OBC sat with no power for too long. Don’t know if this will work for you but at least try bypassing the OBC by jumpering direct to your battery bank.

Thanks for all the help! I am now charging!! It seems that bypassing the OBC and plugging the black wire directly to the black negative leg worked. I tried resetting my OBC by unplugging the wires and moving the throttle to reverse and holding down the pedal but don't think it worked. My buzzer is not working so I depressed the pedal for about 30 seconds. I will try to get my buzzer working again. Not sure if the 30 seconds was long enough.

Glad that worked. This is just a temporary fix. You should get yourself a new OBC which could cost a bunch or a charger with a shutdown timer when it senses full charge. That could cost you a bunch as well. A buddy uses a 12hr timer that plugs into your AC outlet. Plug your charger and set the timer. Hard part is determining how long to set the timer for.

Thanks again for the help. I was able to connect the buzzer and I was able to reset the OBC, but it still did not function. I think the OBC is the original from 1998 so it must be replaced. The OBC and the smart charger seem to be around the $250 price point. Not sure which one to get.

Maybe since you already have a good working charger, it would be feasible to get an OBC. Good luck!
