Default Axle and steering on 84 club car

Hey guys..Thanks for past help...84 cc is running pretty good..I have two new things I need some help on...
1. I was cleaning my brakes and notice oil all over the right rear hub and brake assy...Seems the axle is loose..It will pull out about an inch...Is thee a seal or wheel bearing gone bad...How do I fix it?????...Also I assume the oil is coming from the rear end....What kind of rear end oil do I use and is it put in like a regular car.(rear end plug)...

2. My steering wheel turns about a 1/2 to 3/4 turn before the wheels move...Is there an adjustment for that...

Thanks.
Bill

Is 84 a rack and pinion unit or steering box? I think rack and pinion. I have a used one from '89 if you need it.

If your axle will pull out 1 inch it will pull all the way out of the tube one day as you round a corner

WARNING>>> DO NOT DRIVE THIS CART !
We have a local lawsuit going involving this type of accident which resulted in a DEATH.
There are 2 C clips, one on each side of the wheel bearing. This is what keeps the axle in the tube. There is a seal in there too which you need to replace. It is not a simple job and I would leave this one up to an advanced home mechanic or a professional

Hummm...OK...Thanks for the warning....You say its not a simple job.....OK..I am a good back yard mechanic on cars...Can jerk a motor, tranny, rear end out and replace with no problem....guess you could say Im mechanically inclined...However, just dont know that much about golf carts...Have been able to fix things so far..ie..wiring, brakes, seloniods, etc.....Can you explain to me how to do it or do you still think it should go in the shop...only problem is we have a tire dealer that has a few carts and parts but no mechanic...
Thanks..and thanks again for the warning
Bill
PS..Ill be back to the PC in about 30 mins

You can do it .... first buy the seal. OEM# 1012683 (1983-84)

Better research this.....outer axle c clip 1985 and up? OEM# 1013792

I see no clip listed for '84??? SO maybe somebody else knows what the difference is here.... that is a good seal # ... Call a dealer and ask them.

NCSEADAD, Welcome to BGW!!
You sound like you know your way around a toolbox.
The best thing you can do is pick up or order a shop manual for it and do it yourself.
The price of it is less than an hour shop rate and you can trust your own work.

NCSEADAD I think you have a inner retainer clip broken and or gone? From SCOTTYB photo I think item # 70 and 74 are retainer clips and if so there is what your problem could lay. If yours has no clip you will have a auto type bearing pressed on shaft that would require a HD press to remove and replace bearing. If the bearing is pressed on you may already have housing damage? Not having a older model parts book I think SCOOTYB is correct. AS old as your cart is there could even be a DIFFERENT COMPLETE AXLE ?
