DS Losing Power
I have a 1997 48V DS that I just replaced batteries in. I noticed that the first time I used the cart, going in reverse had very limited power. Also, when the cart sat overnight, it would be very sluggish when I first used it. Power was noticeably different during rides. Any ideas as to this unpredictable power/speed levels?

Re: DS Losing Power
Go to the Trojan Battery site and check out how to charge new batterys. It almost sounds as if the pack voltage is not up to power yet? New batterys require a 8-10 recharge cycles before new batterys are up to full power.
DONT EXPECT MIRACLES AT FIRST WITH NEW BATTERYS they like cars require a break in period. |

Re: DS Losing Power
Did you charge the new batteries BEFORE you began using it?

Re: DS Losing Power
I did charge batteries before first use and have charged three times following the correct break-in procedures for new batteries. I'm aware of the break-in period and that performance may be lacking for the first 10 or so cycles. The cart will not even go forward or reverse now. I hear the solenoid clicking when the accelerator is pressed, but no movement. I believe I could hear a clicking noise when the cart was running before, but I'm not sure.

Re: DS Losing Power
Can we get a voltage reading across the whole pack now?

Since I gather that this problem occurred AFTER the new batteries were installed what changed? Go back to basics first and carefully check the cable positions. What is the TOTAL battery pack voltage now after charge? Is it around 51 volts give or take .1 volts? What are the individual battery voltages? |

Re: DS Losing Power
Total battery reading is 50.9 and individual readings are 8.5, 8.5, 8.5, 8.4, 8.5, 8.4. I purchased the cart without batteries, so I can't be sure this wasn't a problem before. I did use cart for several days/charges before it stopped working. The problem when it was working was intermitent. Sometimes it was going strong and it would then go slightly slower, but the current issue is no movement at all. Could this be a solenoid issue or a problem with the forward/neutral/reverse switch?

Re: DS Losing Power
Check your solenoid by jacking up the rear of cart and making sure rear wheels are clear of ground, then blocking the front wheels so NO movement is possible and then by jumping the two large posts with a HD ( I use a jumper cable ) cable see if motor runs
( WARNING DONT LET IT RUN BUT A FEW SECONDS AND NOT RIGHT AFTER CHARGING BATTERYS AS BATTERY GASING CAN GO BOOM ) because you dont want the armature to blow up from over speed. You could get a face full of metal from motor??? Then if that works replace solenoid, if not then look at all wiring and contacts to and from your forward-reverse switch. If that is OK then I would say, after checking motor cables for condition and tightness that you have a motor problem of some kind. NOTE WHEN CHECKING ANY CONNECTION ON MOTOR ALWAYS USE TWO WRENCHES SO AS TO NOT TWIST INTERNAL WIRING OFF. |

Re: DS Losing Power
When I jumped the solenoid nothing happened. I can't see any poor connections at any other place, but I'll have to look into those connections in more detail. Thanks for your help.

Re: DS Losing Power
Try moving your forward reverse switch back and forth while applying gas and see if you get any power.
