Default powerdrive2 charger pops breaker on front

OK all I need some guidance on this one. Definately a charger problem because we have switched chargers and carts with same problem following the charger only, does same thing on different cart with new batteries.
heres how it goes. Plug charger into cart, a few seconds later the charger hums, the amp needle barely moves off zero, about 2 seconds later the breaker on the front of the charger pops.....I reset the breaker and the same thing.
where do I start with this one--thanks guys

PS this is on 2004 precedent and same on 2007 precedent, both with 4 12V batteries.

Quote from Lester on one of their chargers:

If this occurs when the charger AC input cord is connected to an outlet, without the DC output plug connected to the battery receptacle, the charger’s AC input cord may be shorted. If this occurs just as the electronic charge controller’s relay closes, a shorted transformer primary coil could cause this to occur.

Thanks Scuba
Is this an online site you are referencing---do you have a link to it??
I would like to see how to test for a shorted coil, if it has a test--if not, well still thank You

It's kind of funny because just the other day I was thinking how many charger/charging problem threads there are suddenly, and now my neighbors charger craps out, and now I too am looking for advice.

If anyone has testing info procedures or ideas, please share, dont be shy

http://www.lesterelectrical.com/techservice/topics.htm

They have a page on how to test a transformer but you might want to take out some extra life insurance first!!! Be careful with that one!

Here is a link to their FAQs page with several links. Our PD2 charger IS NOT really shown but there are others that can give you an idea of where to look.

We need to find a REAL PD2 manual/service guide. Hopefully someone here might have one and would share the schematic at least.

Put some alligator clips on the meter.
Be careful when disconnecting the Capacitor, with everything unplugged short across
the Capictor leads and short each to Case with a screw driver ( I'v had the H$%^&ll knocked out of me a few times by charged Capacitors)

I did that once on an RV roof AC capacitor.... JUST ONCE!

Thanks for the replies so far..'
I haven't had time to try and dig into this thing, but from what I read in the Lester site, sounds like a bad trasnformer...does a transformer come with the capacitors when gotten new, or are those seperate. Hoperfully I will have time tomorrow to check...basically it sounds like om making sure none of the coils are shorted together right?? I was wondering if anyone had apicture of which are the capacitior wires I need to short.& ground out to discharge...I DONT WANT TO DIE

I would think you would buy them separately.

Here is a picture of one in a Lester Charger... so no excuses it you accidentally touch it!!! And notice how close to the case the meter alligator clips are, just barely touching the plastic to the case... WOW (Actually they already discharged it to take that OHM reading!)

Here is a link to more pictures... but of a different one then the PD2 charger.

Just a thought, but maybe using the leads from a 100w light bulb in a socket would be a better (safer) way to discharge the caps.

Good idea! Here is what Lester said to do on discharging the capacitor which is essentially on the same lines and maybe a bit easier...

"Discharge the capacitor by adjusting your multi-meter to its highest DC voltage scale and then touch and hold the test leads to the capacitor terminals for three seconds. Follow this by shorting across the terminals with an insulated metal tool. A capacitor discharged in this manner will be safe to touch."

Ox,

Just make sure you're not that meter or metal tool!
