Default 48v Club Car Needs an upgrade. Suggestions please

I just bought a 1999 48 volt club car. I put in new batteries and I am not happy with the performance. I use the cart on rocky/dirt roads with many hills. What should I do to upgrade first. I am not looking for super fast speed but I would like to increase the speed on hills and eventually put on a lift kit.
I have a stock controller.
Thanks

Cables first , upgrade all #6 cables to #4 welder grade cables.

Be aware that the normal break in period before reaching Max performanance in new Batteries, is 12-20 charges.
