Default Batteries for '05 Precedent

Hi guys and gals,

My '05 Precedent has the original ClubCar Trojans fitted, after a game of golf the pack drops to 49.25v (avg. over last 9 games). Typical before golf is 50.28v. While these numbers are not fantastic...I get by with my round of golf somewhat in 'slow motion'. Sometimes there is plenty of power for fast acceleration but mostly quite moderate.

I fitted a 48v desulfacator about 6 weeks ago, I also added desulacation fluid to 2 of the batteries that are/were well behind the other 2 batteries. They seem to have 'levelled' out and are not deteriorating as they were.(I do not get sub 12v readings out of those batteries anymore).

My conumdrum is the price of new batteries. From reading this forum 'everyone' seems to lean towards the Trojan. Well, here in Australia they are Au$385 per batt. with 6mths warranty. Delkor are Au$235 per unit with 2 YEAR warranty. The mob that sell the desulfacating fluid will double the warranty of any battery as long as the fluid is applied to the new battery. That's another AU$15/battery on top of the Trojans to get 12mths. The Delkor are sealed.

I noticed that Ezgo offer "Unmatched warranty – 4 years, 1200 rounds, 21500 amp hours (whichever comes sooner) PLUS life time warranty on frame. Guaranteed to do 36 holes of golf per day." They are on Trojan 1260's.

So, the questions are.....

1) are sealed batteries suitable for a 1 round per day, 3 times per week, golf cart?

2) are Trojans really worth it?

3) What are Crown batteries reputation in the States?

heres my opinion and just mine...............even a decent set of batteries will preform well as long as you break them in right and you maintain them on a regular basis...................trogens are by far the most popular battery out there and if you have the cash than so be it but even trojens if not broke in and maintained are ne better then just decent batteries, as far as crown batts go theres nothing wrong with them they are a good battery..............mid range batteries that are broken in right and maintained on a regular basis should give you a good 4 to 6 years of service, when i say maintained i mean every 2 weeks or so of checking water, and keeping battery cable ends very clean and tight............it takes 15 to 20 minutes two times a month but most people put the batts in and think ok i can just forget about them well you can if you want to buy new ones every 2 years if your lucky........................so save some cash by buying what your budgett allows and just keep up with the maintence you,ll be fine, also keep up with condition of cables they are just as important..........i see more breakdowns that are directly related tom a lack of any sort of maintence that its no longer funny cause they could have spent 10 dollars instead of 200 and a breakdown.................also if your gonna run acessories get a reducer that will help a lot also...........if its a 48 volt cart get a 48 to 12 volt reducer and make sure its installed right........i don,t like the 24 volt to 12 volts cause your still just using 1/2 the pack and will throw things off down the road so get one that makes use of the whole pack...............god luck over there and don,t forget to check your shoes for that dreaded funnel web spider or jack jumpers befoe you put your foot in there.......................................

Question Re: Batteries for '05 Precedent

Thanks Tom,

Yeah, I live where the funnel webs' love it! The most I have bottled in a day is 19....I took them upto the Reptile Park where they milk them for venom. They came out of a site that we were preparing to build a pool.

Maint. is not a problem...I was wondering more about the sustainability of the non-maintenance type battery....does/has anyone used them? One of the guys at golf had a bad experience with AGM m/free and was wondering if this is widespread?

We don't tend to run many accessories off of our packs , we don't have too extreme a climate hot is rarely over 100F and lows about 50F....we play golf 56 weeks a year.....so no need for extra's....OTHER than a sneaky cooler in the front bumper for summer!

I'm getting by OK at the mo'....just starting to prepare myself for the inevitable....naturally everyone else's experience is what I'm after.

Would 100ah batteries (versus the 1275 Trojans in the cart) get around a golf course OK?

So many questions!

Thanks again.

yes you,ll be fine, as mentioned just break them iun right and maintain them and maybe a few drops of funnel web spider venom in each one...................lol..............might need wheelie bars at that point............but i wouldn,t break the bank on trojens if you keep up on maintence...............as for those other batts your talking about if they were all that and a bag of chips there would be a lot more guys running them........seems the few members we have here that used them or tried them either wern,t happy or they didn,t pan out like they should so i would stay with good old regular G.C. batts that is unless you have money to just toss around but if thats so just drop a load of bills in the mail for me i sure could use it............................................
