Will this 12V boost theory work
The cart I want to play with here is a VGlide setup with one solenoid and 5 resistors. I could very easily wire up a battery as shown with a seperate solenoid to activate and add 12 more Volts to the system as shown in the drawing. I was thinking of this to add a temporary boost of sorts. My question is would it work. In theory voltage will go for the path of least resistance so is the battery going to add the voltage as I would like, or is something else going to happen because of the battery not being directly in line. Also would the solenoids be able to handle the extra voltage on a 10 second interval? Im also thinking of rigging up some micro switches for full throttle and forward only. Cant imagine what the polarity differences would cause if hit the boost in reverse lever mode
P.S. no laughing at the picture, not so easy drawing in MS Paint real quick. |

Re: Will this 12V boost theory work
Umm....dude, thats already been on the forum. Nothing new. Theres a controller version and then theres a resistor cart version. Cept it don't work like that. Your just adding 12 volts into a 48 volt system, it's not in series with the other batts.....in other words the way its wired I don't think it'll work.....maybe blow up or burn something.

umm--OK--like I tried a search and looked around
Just a thought I had and wanted to ask, wasn't claiming any new ideas here Why ya gotta be like that ? |

Be like what? I was jus sayin its already been done. If you wanna try it go ahead. Lots of good stuff you can learn along the way.

Re: Will this 12V boost theory work
Looks like its going to be a direct short of the 12 volt battery when that solenoid is activated.

Re: Will this 12V boost theory work
Maybe I took your answer the wrong way---my wife yells at me for that all the time
Dont want to try it if its not going to work. I see now what you mean its not in series, I would have to break the wire from the resistor setup to the motor and at the same time make the connection that includes the extra 12V battery. Is there a solenoid that does just that?? 4 studs, breaks ione side and connects the other side?? |

Re: Will this 12V boost theory work
The key is getting the boost batt in series with the others at the flip of a switch. It's not a real good idea to run the extra volts through a set of club car coils. They are already being pushed at 48 volts. If you place a micro that will only make at WOT thats not an issue. We used High voltage/high amp diodes to keep from back feed into the controller. Resistor version takes a parrallel 36 volt back and when the switch is thrown it flips to a series 72 volt pack. It also uses high amp diodes to keep from frying things.
You don't want to use any old solenoid either. If a solenoid welds itself shut things get fun real quick. |

Are the higher amps of running a parallel pack not as detrimental to the VGlide components, as say forcing higher voltages thru? Theres already a cargo bed on this thing..whats another 6 batteries, right? |

Re: Will this 12V boost theory work
Its six 12 volt batts wired series/parrallel to make 36 volts, then its switched from series/parrallel to straight series. You using the same batts to do both. No placing the batts in the bagwell, nothing, no "extra" batts at all. It only works on resistor carts.

Re: Will this 12V boost theory work
Nope, it won't work the way you are showing it wired. The way you're showing it, you aren't adding another 12v into the series circuit, because from the resistor coils over to the motor it is still a direct line, not being broken. In fact, the way your drawing is laid out, when the "boost solenoid" is triggered, you'd be connecting your positive and negative of the "boost" battery together and if the solenoid doesn't blow, you'd torch some wires, posts, and/or possibly explode a battery...
You could theoretically add a couple of solenoids to add an extra battery though. More like this - |
