Default Need for speed

Hi, I have a 97 48V CC. I am wanting to get some more speed out of this cart. I need new batteries and was thinking about changing the motor and controller at the same time. First, local dealer is telling me they have switched from Tojan to Interstate and are having less warranty claims. Batteries are the same price($125), just not sure which ones to get. Second, dealer will install motor, controller, and 4 guage wires for $1800. Does this sound like a good price, or could I save much by doing it myself? Thanks for the help.

He just said 500 amp motor and alltrax controller. I have known the guy awhile and he is pretty straight forward.

A few things to ask or consider before making any decisions...

Do you know exactly how fast your cart can go NOW on a certain flat stretch of land using a GPS?
(Without knowing you have nothing to compare any changes.)

If you do know exactly how fast your cart can go what are your expectations for that $1,800 investment?
(Would you be happy with 2 mph gain? What will that local dealer guarantee you for the $1,800.)

Exactly what motor, (make & model,) and exactly what controller, (make & MODEL,) not just 500 amp. You will need both.

What will the local dealer guarantee you in speed gain and is he willing to put it in writing, (not likely,) verify your speed on that certain stretch of land BEFORE & AFTER, or is he just going to say, Don’t worry, you’ll be happy? I doubt anyone would guarantee a speed gain since there are many factors to take into consideration but you can get a good idea of what to expect right here on this site based on what others, (once you determine the exact motor and controller combination,) got with a similar cart to yours.

Once you know what parts he plans on using you can shop them and determine how much is parts profit and how much is labor profit, which your local dealer is entitled to. But even the vendors on BGW can vary as much as $200 for the same Alltrax controller. They set the price they deem fair and you as a consumer decide who you want to do business with. Once all of this information is gathered you can answer your own question and possibly negotiate a little with your dealer, still leaving him what he needs to make as a reasonable profit in order to pay his help and keep his doors open for you in the future.

If you are not that handy and especially if you are not comfortable with wiring then you’ll need to pay your local dealer for his expertise and time to net the results you wish for. If he makes a mistake he’ll eat it since that’s his business. If you make a mistake you’ll have to eat it!

What Scuba said.
Occasionaly someone will come on and ask if the price of a Cart is fair or the price of a upgrade is fair.
What may seem fair to one , may not seem to others it generally comes down
to how bad do U want it, availability of funding, do U have the skills to do it
yourself (with Assistance) ...etc. ?
In this forum most people come here for help in doing their OWN work/upgrades .
