A capacitor stores electricity for a sudden release needed like when starting a motor .... I think you might mean his cart has a resistor on the solenoid?

WARNING

If this is a shunt ..... the cart motor will not last long under this type of extra voltage hits..... Do Not do this to your cart!!!

I have never seen one but have heard the warnings from techs who know a lot more than me.....

Simplest terms, A capacitor is an energy storage device. A capacity its only going to store as much voltage as whats put into it. If the cart is a 36 volt cart then it will store 36 volts worth of power and a very short burst of power at that. Power meaining a second or so worth of 36 volts. So....in other words a capacitor by itself is not giving him another 4 MPH. He could have a resistor wired across the feild that is placed into the circuit with the flip of a switch but thats considered a shunt. A shunt will give you additional speed at the expense of armature life. A shunt decreases power to the feild and increases the power to the armature and causes severe arcing of the comm. Don't get me wrong, a shunt does what its intended to do. It just decreases motor life tremendously. Snap a pic of it and post it or you can email it to me...then we'll all know exaclty what it is.

The description you gave sounds like all the other descriptions of shunts. Commonly found on ebay.
