Corrosion Problems Suck!

Have a 97 Club Car with batteries that were replaced in 03, so they are 6 years old. Yesterday after about 13 holes, it started slowing down and jerking when you took off. I remembered having a corrosion problem once before when it was doing that, so I thought I would check batteries and cables and see what was going on. Cables looked pretty good since I just replaced them a couple of months ago, but a couple had some pretty good corrosion going on. I took off all cables, took a wire brush to them and the battery posts and cleaned them up real good, then sprayed the terminals with anti corrosion stuff before putting cables back on.

Ran the cart around the golf course, without problems, then thought I would check voltage on battery pack and individual batteries. All 6 batteries showed 8.3 volts after running 18 holes. I could not get a reading on the entire pack. Couldn't figure out what in the heck I was doing wrong. Tested my meter on another battery against another meter and it worked fine.

Several beers later while cruising the golf course on the test run, as I was going across a bridge, the thought came in to my head that if you have the meter set on 20 volts, it AIN"T GONNA READ above that! Once I set the meter to 200 volts I got 49.9 on the pack after running 18 holes.

I know that it is time to replace the batteries, but my cart partner and I are trying to limp through one more summer of playing before we shell out the money for new Trojans.

I feel like a dumb butt for not looking at the setting before I tried to check pack voltage, but I guess the beer made me come to my senses!

Anyway, corrosion on cable ends sucks big time!

49.9 is not that bad after 18 Holes , that 20 + 20 + 9.9

I think that if you use a hydrometer on all cells you will find that either-or NUMBERS 5 and 6 batterys will be weak. These are the ones right under the drivers seat. For some reason these seem to go first and will cause what you are getting "slowing down and jerking when taking off"
Of course at 8.3 the batterys are less than 50% charged, but after 18 holes thats not bad?

As long as it gets me around the course for 18 holes two or three times a week and doesn't strand me out there, I will be content. Like I said, we know we are going to have to replace the batteries soon, we are just trying to stretch them as far as we can before turning loose of $600 for a new set!

Remember that every time you get the jerking you are doing damage to motor and differential that could end up costing MORE than a set of batterys.

Old Mec, after cleaning all the cable ends and battery terminals, it no longer jerks or anything, just runs like it supposed to. If it starts jerking on take-off again, will look at cable ends, etc., and if not corroded will have to bite the bullet and replace batteries.
