Default Yet another battery question

Installed six new Energizer 6 volt batteries (Sam's Club) in a new to me '91 Club Car. I soon found out the cart seems to run fine and the batteries seem fine. My question is related to charging the batteries. I tried the old Lester Electric Model 13800 Club Car charger while the batteries were pretty fresh (37.4 volts across all). The charger decided charge was not necessary and clicked back off in a matter of seconds.

Days later when batt's. were down to slightly over 36.0 volts, again tried charger. The charger began to donate 18 amps and kept going. Five hours later at midnight it was still pushing 15 amps. I wanted to let the cycle finish so went to bed and rechecked at 7.00 AM. The charger was still giving 4 Amps. Looked into a couple of battery cells. Acid was well activated and bubbling and offered a fairly strong sulfur smell. Overcharged?? I pulled the plug on the charger. Batteries at that point checked 40.x volts without charger on. After settling for four hours, batteries checked 38.x volts.

Sorry for the length of this post but feel I need to offer fodder for smarter minds than mine. I suspect charger should kick out sooner. I should mention this cart had five (previously frozen) 8 volt batteries when purchased (40 V.) Is it possible or likely the charger may be modified to satisfy old batteries?

Thanks in advance for any help offered.

yes it can take up to 16 hours to charge batts

the smell is normal

just make sure the water level is ok

and use distilled water

and the first 10 to 15 charges on new batts may take longer than usual

Thanks for the replies. Next time I will let the charger shut itself down and see how things look. It is my nature to worry, and even bottom of the line new batteries ain't cheep.

For redriderno22, I know some people in your town and they are A O.K.

For Otter70, I have actually been to your town back in the last century. I think it was about '78. Really nice place. Hope to get back someday.

That's normal for new batteries. My new Trojans took 16 hours the first time. Boiled like crazy. Thought something was wrong. That's just how they do. Rinse your batteries off regularly to keep corrosion down. Check water often and fill them properly. Something like a 1/4 inch below the inner sleeve in the battery fill tube is correct. Overfilling causes more vapor to spill out and more corrosion. Under-filling with exposed plates is a disaster for your battery. Keep cables clean. Good luck with the new batteries.

Wait a minute.....you original post says you installed new 6 volt batteries and you removed 8 volt batteries from the cart!!!!!

Is that correct or a typo??

Is the cart supposed to be 36 or 48 volt? You will have different chargers for the two!!

Thank you for the input and the good advice.

It is a '91 cart and 36V. The charger directions state the charger is intended for 36V consisting only of 18 cells total. The PO stated that when he bought the cart, it had the five 8V batteries (40V total) and it worked fine for three years until he let them freeze and break. He claimed no knowledge or why it was set up that way. Being a somewhat by the book guy, (I wish I had a book) and knowing just about nothing about electric carts, I went back to six sixes. The cart seems to be running fine this way but I must qualify that by saying I have never used an electric before.

Thanks for asking,
