Default needing some throttle help on my cart

i have a 1996 CC 48V powerdrive series. Im wondering if i need to replace my throttle mechanism....it looks like its a regular potentionmeter and not the v-glide. if i upgrade it, im thinking of the MCOR conversion kit. I would like to test it first though and see if it works and if it does then i wont convert. how do i test it? the motor doesnt work, do i need to get the motor working first?
