'97 Club Car - I'd like some direction on where to start

I bought a '97 Club Car w/ a 36v system last year from a golf course going out of business. I more concerned with efficiency & functionality than I am looks & show. It’s been great and I plan on making some upgrades to it…

Replace Batteries (They are shot)
Add Headlights & Taillights (For safety on the beach after dark.)
Add Flip Rear Seat(Rear springs if needed)

The most pressing of course is I know the batteries and cables need to be replaced & this is where my dilemma begins.

My goal for next year is to use it for off road. I don’t want to spend all this money on 6volt batteries only to have to replace them when I upgrade to a higher speed/higher torque motor next year. I was also wanting to put a lift kit & larger tires on next year.

Should I go back with 8 volt batteries now since I already have to replace them? Could I do this without upgrading the entire system? From reading other posts I believe if I went this route that I would probably have to install New Solenoid, New pb-6 Potentiometer, & New Speed Controller. If I did this would that get me out of upgrading the motor for now?

Thanks for help here any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

CHeck the stock controller it may be marked 36-48 volts? If it is no need to change it. THe pb-6 or MCOR will work, no need to change but, you are correct on the solenoid and the controller if it is not 48v rated.

PS: Don't forget $300 dollers for a new 48 Volt charger as soon as you install Batteries.

Scottyb, I'll check the speed controller while I'm at my father inlaws tomorrow. Ive had it at his farm for a few months now. Thanks for the help.
