Default low amperage during charging

Hi
I have a 1995 48volt CC that I use at the local golf course. I replaced one of the batteries last year. And everything was normal, at charge it drew 15-18 amps and would be fully charged when I returned the next day.
Now since setting through the winter on the charger it only draw 5 amps when first plugged into the charger. Everything else seems fine, it was never fast and is still slow but has carried two people over 27 holes with only getting a bit slower pulling the hills. You could walk faster.
Any reason that the amperage draw should be so low??

Thanks
Jim

it sounds like your batteries were taking a dump.by replacing one with a new one did not help.the others drew down the power of the new battery.so you should have replaced all of them at that time.
im am sure one of the toaster experts will be along to put this in tech terms.

Is there another cart you can check your charger on? or another charger you can borrow to try? That way we can see if it is a charger or cart problem?

Agree with Scotty here, to charger also, probably a bad capacitor. Best dumb-proof test is what he suggested.

Then after that test and if a good charger results, concentrate on batteries.

Hi

Well I was finally able to get up to the course and swap out the chargers. And its the same still charging at 5amps. So the problem is not the charger.

Any Ideas?

now it´´s time for battery testing, do a search on the forum, plenty of information here on how to test them, voltage readings, etc. Probably you have shorted cell which is increasing the voltage when you plug in the charger and that makes the charger go to low amperage charge. Read battery voltage for the whole pack and batteries individually without charger and then with the charger, with those reads we can probably help you.

Well this is where it gets messy. The battery pack is 5 trojan 8 volts and 1 6 volt, I know, I know this is not an acceptable way to run them but after paying over a $100 for a new battery, only to find out it was a 6 volt not the 8 volt I had asked for I am trying to get what I can out of this setup. I ran this for 5 months last year and it worked fine until after spending the winter on the charger in the shed it started charging at 5 amps.

I have checked the water level in all batteries and checked them with a hydrometer all are in the "good" range.

Batteries after charging
all trojans at 8.41 volts pack at 48.4

After 9 holes
8.39 pack at 48.2

Thanks
Jim

time for new battery pack, that setup is completely messed up. That was the reason why it lasted ONLY 5 months.
Another option it will be to find same aged 8v battery to replace that 6v you have.
But if were you I will dust off the wallet and whole new battery pack. Sorry to sound negative but is the way it is.

The 6v battery has much higher amperage than the 8v ones, though you are hurting the 8v when charging the pack.
