Mystery Diagnosis...Cart won't move!
Hello Buggy Enthusiasts,
Let me give you the run down...I have purchased two 2005 Club Car 48V electric golf carts through Craigslist. One of the golf carts runs great, while the second cart does not run. When purchased the owner told me all the second cart needed to get running were some new cables to connect the batteries together, be charged and then it would work. Seems easy enough...! lol First step, went to the local Club Car dealer and purchased 5 12" standard battery cables. Got home that night and wired the golf cart and connected the batteries in series; positive to negative, positive to negative...and so forth. I have a picture attached of my wire job...hold your applause I know it looks good. :) Proud of the work I went ahead and plugged in the charger plug to see if the cart would now charge. It was charging! Happy that the cart was now charging I left it to charge for 5 hours. When I came back from letting the cart charge, I noticed another symptom, which was the charger plug was extremely HOT! For the moment, I just acknowledged this and was excited to see if the cart would run now. Put the key to "ON" and pressed pedal...and nothing! Cart is still not moving, no sounds, no clicking sound, there is no response when I press the pedal down. I now wonder why the charger plug was hot. I think there might be something wrong with the batteries creating a resistance for the charger and therefore making the plug extremely hot?...First thing I do is check the level of the water in all of the cells of the battery. All but one of the panels in all of the cells had low water and I filled it up. Thinking this might be the problem I re-charged the batteries and let it sit for awhile...the charger plug was still getting hot and cart still did not run :( OK, my next thought was that maybe one of the batteries does not have a charge and is bad. Got a voltmeter and put it to each battery, and each battery had a reading of just under 8V, right around 7.94V. I then put the voltmeter to the beginning and end of the circuit of the batteries and it read just under 48V at 47.8V. I do not know if these readings are typical, but they seem normal to me since they are around what they should be. With all of this information it seems like I have been able to rule out the batteries being the culprit but with the charger plug getting hot while charging is throwing me off! My questing to all of you, does this problem see familiar to anyone? Batteries have a charge, can be charged, charger plug gets hot while charging, and the cart doesn't want to move at all. I understand that this can be a number of things, but if any of you have an idea of where I can turn, please, let me know what you think. Thanks in advance!! P.S. In the second picture that I provided the cart that does not work is the green golf cart. |

Re: Mystery Diagnosis...Cart won't move!
Are you letting the charger run until it shuts off. Those numbers are very weak batteries. The charger, plug and cord do get very warm when charging weak batteries and pumping in lots of amperage. let it run until it shuts off, wait 15 minutes and then retest batteries. Post your readings for more info. Also check out the battery volatge table Im linking you to..very helpful

Re: Mystery Diagnosis...Cart won't move!
You know I cannot tell you that I have let the charger run until it has shut off. I figured that it had charged enough to run, atleast, and then I felt that the charger plug has hot and thought something was wrong. Tomorrow, I will charge the cart all day and let it run till it shuts off.
I have another question...does charging the weak batteries for such a long time and with the plug getting so hot damage the charger at all? I am a newb to all of this and do not know the ins and outs yet. Thanks again! |

Re: Mystery Diagnosis...Cart won't move!
Are you using the same charger on both carts? Everything is pointing to bad batteries. look at the chart. 50 % capacity is empty...48v is empty. 7.9 is below empty....

Re: Mystery Diagnosis...Cart won't move!
Im tellin ya the last couple Precedents we had, The chargers and cords got real real warm when recharging batteries that were run way down from use. The charger cases were almost too hot to touch. Once I made the mistake of using an extension cord...talk about the cord getting hot--holy crap!! but they all still work to this day.
