85 Club Car suddenly quits
Hello, and thanks for any help. The wifey brings home a decent looking golf cart. After a couple of weeks it just stops. This is my first time to work on a golf cart. I have been reading some posts, and have inspected wires for visable breaks. I have located the diagram also.
So where do I start. I have 36 Volt at the F/R. |

Get a volt meter and put the red probe on the main pos. cable and the black on the main neg. Gently and I mean GENTLY push the accel. pedal. You may want to jack up the rear just to be safe. Watch for the voltage to drop when the solenoid engages. If voltage drops off quick, its either a bad battery or bad cable. If voltage stays, does the solenoid click? If no click, check for continuity at the keyswitch, and the micro switch on the F&R. Start with that.

Thanks guys. OK I have 36v at the F/R terminals. I do have solenoid clicks. 36V holds when pedal is pressed. It does not drop

Re: 85 Club Car suddenly quits
Ok, I may be wrong but if its an 85, it should have 5 solenoids behind the batteries with a set of speed coils. Put cart in neutral, key off, unhook main neg. battery cable. Carefully take the bussbar off of the solenoids. Its the copper strip that runs across the large poles on the solenoids. after you get the bussbar out of the way, hook the main neg. battery cable back up. Turn the key on, put F&R in forward. Take a voltmeter set for continuity and place leads on both large terminals of the 1st solenoid on the drivers side. This should be #1. As you mash the accel pedal, the solenoid should engage/click and your voltmeter should beep or show continuity. Do this for all of the solenoids. My guess, if you are hearing a click, they are energizing, but not making contact on the inside.

solenoids 001.jpg Remove the Buss bar. If the Buss bar is not removed, it will give you a false reading. It can also enable the cart to move if the solenoid starts working again. Be safe.
solenoids 003.jpg first solenoid on drivers side solenoids 002.jpg volt meter leads here, volt meter set for continuity. Check each solenoid. As you mash the accel pedal, it should trigger the solenoids 1-2-3-4-5. Hope this helps.... |
