Default 2000 48v rear axle clunk

When you take off there is a clunk and it sounds like the gears have play in them and its taking up the slack.. It has a slight whine when moving too. Its not real bad but doesnt sound right and figured I should look at it. It has a kawasaki rear axle with the bolt heads facing the drivers side. I've done a couple searches and nothing sounds like what I have going on. It does have a 3.75 motor on it from the dealer when it was new if that helps. Thanks

PS The noise is above and beyond the solenoid noise.

Default Re: 2000 48v rear axle clunk

If it only "clunks" when you take off it could be play in the rear end gears. Do you get any clicking sounds when on the move by letting off the foot pedal? If so, it could be the spline bumper between the motor and gear spline. It is a plastic insert that takes up the play in the motor/spline connection. Not too big of a job to replace. Have you checked the rear end fluid level You can get a better feel for the sound by putting the rear end up on jacks and turning the tire by hand to feel how much play you have and you can check for a bad wheel bearing. Also tap the foot pedal and turn the motor over until it reaches speed to see what sounds you get. BE CAREFUL and don't over rev the motor while on stands as you can get a flying junkyard of parts that ruin your whole day. Report back any results.
