Just got my first cart. I was told the charger will NOT turn off by itself. This is on a 97, 48 volt.

Could someone verify this? If this is true, would a timer be the solution to ensure not overcharging the batteries?

The charger will not turn off if the batteries can not be brought up to a full charge. You probably have one or more bad batteries...... post the voltage readings of each batteriy.....ie, 8.23 volts

I just got the cart yesterday. The guy I bought it from told me, "Club Car chargers don't turn off automatically". So are you telling me they normally do turn off automatically as long as the batteries come up to appropriate charge?

I'll whoop out the digital volt meter this weekend and report back the readings...

ScottyB is correct Clubcar 48v charges are controlled by the OBC (On Board Computer) that is actually on the golf cart, when the pack is fully charged the OBC will tell the charger to turn off.

Took a voltage reading for each battery. I'm getting 8.6 volts. Put the cart on charge for the first time since I bought it. I noticed when I put it on charge, the amp meter read zero. The charger was making a very low hum. I left it on charge for 6 hrs. After the sixth hour, I took the cart for a test ride and it was apparant it didn't take any charge at all. I did some reading and found that if your battery pack reads less than 36 volts, the on board computer will not allow the charger to come on. Mine tested fine so I went looking elsewhere for the problem. I found a fuse on the body of the charging receptacle that was broken. This is not the fuse found inline of the gray wire coming from the receptacle, but on the body itself. I jumpered the fuse and now the charger is working as it should.

Question: What is the purpose of this fuse, and will it hurt anything to jumper it like I have?

The purpose of a fuse is to open an electrical circuit whenever the current exceeds the capacity of that circuit. The fuse is valuable in it's ability to prevent damage to the components in the circuit (controllers, switches, etc.).

You should replace the fuse with one of the same rating. Word of advice here, buy a couple of fuses. If the first fuse pops when you put it in, then you have an overload of the circuit. This can be caused by many things, but let's take one step at a time.

I understand the general purpose of a fuse in an electrical circuit. What I'm wondering is what does this fuse protect specifically?

If I am correct, this fuse monitors input current from a battery charger. I have the same type of fuse (although older) on my 36V cart.

Yeah I too think this fuse only comes into play during the charging process. Think it would be ok to bypass this fuse to charge up my cart till I can get a new one?
