Charging Problems

I found the following information in another thread about charging problems:

The black wire coming out of charge recepticle has a yellow fuse holder, open it up and connect a jumper from the end coming out of recepticle the the negative on Battery 6 or the last one in series. Plug in the charger if it comes on your OBC is most likely TOAST.

I looked at my cart, and I believe the GREY wire on the back of the charging receptacle has the fuse block on it. Mycart is a 97 DS 48V, and I think the OBC is shot. I tried resetting the OBC per club car's directions, and red light is still coming on. When I hook charger up after playing 18 holes, I can watch it and the charger does not kick on. I get tired of watching for more than a minute, and walk off. I feel like it kicks on sometime because the cart runs strong. New batteries were installed two weeks ago. Yesterday, I plugged a different charger into our cart, and it still did not come on to start charging.

If I bypass the OBC like the above directions say to do, and it charges when I plug it up, then I guess a new OBC is in order.

Can an OBC work sometimes and not work sometimes? Just curious.

Anyone got any more ideas to try???

I have a 97 as well and the wire coming from the center of the charging receptacle is gray. Perhaps the post you obtained the info from was from a different year cart or 36 volt cart.

When I attach the charger to my cart, there is a few seconds delay, and then the charger comes on. It stays on for a moment, shuts off, then turns back on and stays on until the battery pack is fully charged. If your amp meter on your charger is reading zero, you're not getting any charge.

I had the same problem, and I found the fuse on the charging receptacle was broken.

Lightninn, thanks for the reply. I have not checked the fuse yet. Will check that tomorrow after work.

I checked the pack reading this afternoon after charger had been plugged in all night. It didn't kick on after I plugged it in in the 2 minutes I watched it. The pack reading this afternoon was 48 volts, and each individual battery was 8 volts. After reading a lot on this forum, this sound low. Batteries and cables are only about 2 weeks old and have been run for two rounds of 18 holes, and one round of 9 holes. I would think that if the charger was not coming on at all, the batteries would be getting low by now, but it ran great yesterday. Looked at back of charger receptacle, and no apparent corrosion to be seen. Technician at cart place I have been talking to says he has never seen intermittent problem out of obc, either it worked or it didn't work, and the light has been coming on for about 4 months, but charger would kick in sometimes, and sometimes it would not kick in.

If the fuse is good tomorrow, I will jumper around the obc and plug charger in and see if it kicks on. If so, I guess the obc is toast, and time to order another one.

Any more suggestions before I take my .45 to the cart and fill it full of lead???

if you bypass it it might not run i just went true two weeks of hell fixing on=e just change the obc it controls a lot of stuff if you start bypssing it will cost you a lot in the long run just my 2 cents

oh when the chager comes on then it turns off but comes back on its the obc taking a reading

The charger is not coming on. I just want to bypass the OBC to see if that is the problem. If it is, I will replace it.

There is a grey wire coming out of the back of the charge recepticle. If you have checked the fuse inside the yellow fuse holder and it is ok, give the grey wire a little tug where it goes into the back of the recepticle. They will corrode inside where it is soldered. If the soldered connection is failing, This would cause an intermittent or on again, off again problem.

**UPDATE**

Well, I checked both fuses, both were good. Jumpered from grey wire with fuse block in it to negative terminal on battery 6 like someone else suggested in another thread, plugged in charger, and it kicked in after about 1 second.

I guess the OBC is toast and needs to be replaced. Didn't want to spend any more money after batteries, cables, and windshield, but I guess if I want the cart to continue charging and running I will have to spend a little more money and replace the OBC. Hopefully it will run until it is time to replace the batteries again in 5 or 6 years, then we will trade it in on another cart.

Thanks for everyone's help! I have learned a LOT of information from this forum that I probably wouldn't have learned any other way!

**UPDATE UPDATE**

Well, my new OBC came in today and I went to the golf course where the cart is stored. After about 2 hours and a couple of cold beers, I finally got the new OBC installed.

Turned the key on, put it in reverse, and the buzzer sounded! Hit the gas and it backed up like it should have. New orange battery light came on, and I thought oh hell, here we go. Pulled cart back into stall and plugged in charger. Nothing. Then, about 10 seconds later it kicked on and started charging like it should! Was sitting on about 15 amps when I left. Hopefully this weekend if I get to play, all will be well with the cart. After new batteries and cables, then a new OBC, I am about tapped out for any more repairs for a while. At least I have a buddy that owns 1/2 of the cart, and I only had to pay half of the cost!

Thanks for all the great advice you folks have given me on this forum. I have learned a great deal, and hope to continue learning!
