Precedent axle removal
Can anyone tell me how to remove the axles out of a 2005 Precedent? Are there clips near the brakes or does the whole assy have to be disassembled?

Re: Precedent axle removal
Knowing how much CC hates to change I would guess that they have the same axle retaining clip behind the Drum mounting Flange and inside of the axle tube as before.... worth a look anyway

Re: Precedent axle removal
Like said above. On my DS you have to remove the tire. Then, remove the drum. Using a pair of snap ring pliers remove the clip and the axle slides out. You may need a slide hammer to remove it. I know I needed one for mine to come out.

Re: Precedent axle removal
Thanks all! I'm hoping the Precedent has the clips behind the brake housing. All I want to do is flip flop the brake plates so that the brake actuator is at 12 o'clock instead of six. This should give me more brake cable slack.
Any thoughts on whether this is a good plan? |

Re: Precedent axle removal - DONE!
Yes, the Precedent has spring clips behind the brake plate. The spring clips are a monumental pain in the a$$ to remove and install. There is very little room to get a right angle spring clip plier between the back of the axle flange and where the clip resides. Even removing the brake shoes, etc. did not help to provide additional clearance.
Anyway, the purpose to remove the axles was to gain more brake cable slack by flipping the brake plates, right to left. After the 6" lift, the cables (especially drivers side) where very tight and causing the brakes to pulse the pedal as the axle rotating slightly during braking. Flipping the brake plates puts the brake actuator at 12 o'clock vs 6 o'clock position. Now the cables don't have to travel below the axle to get to the brake plate. Everything went as planned until I went to install the factory plate that clamps the leaf spings to the axle. It normally sits below the axle and has nothing to interfere with it. Now, it has to sit on top of the axle and the leaf springs since it also incorporates the bracket that captures the brake cable. I quickly found out that the leaf springs interfered with its location. I had to grind a notch in both plates so it would sit properly. The last photo shows the notched area. In the end, the modification worked as planned. The drivers side cable is still tight, but not nearly as much as before. The rear of the cart looks cleaner with the brake cables now tucked up high. I also flipped the U bolts so the threaded ends are facing up also providing a cleaner look. the only negative is the brake adjuster access is restricted as the window now faces the leaf springs. |
