Charger won't come one. Tried friend's on my cart and his won't come on either
I have a Club Car "Power Drive 2" 48V/13A charger and it won't come on when I plug it in. It's worked fine for 2 years, but all of a sudden just quit. I thought that something had gone wrong with the charger, but I borrowed my neighbor's Club Car charger and plugged it into my cart and his won't come on either. No click, no meter turn on. Nothing. Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated!
BTW - This is my first post, so I hope I've put it in the correct forum. Ducker17 |

Forgive me but I have to ask.......Did you plug it in to the same outlet? Could be a tripped breaker in your breaker panel.

Thanks for the reply, Rockin' G Ranch, and really, don't apologize for the basic first step question. I'm sure there are a lot who wouldn't have checked this. But yeah, I did check it via plugging something else into the outlet, and also tried the charger plugged into a whole separate outlet just to be sure. Still nothing.
Thanks.......Ducker17 |

Can you check the pack voltage with a voltmeter?

Thanks scottyb. Yes, I do have a volt meter, but am not sure really what I'd be doing specifically, with it in this case. Where on the pack would I be checking, and what would I be looking for? I assume I would have the charger plugged in while doing this to see if the current is reaching the pack?

Re: Charger won't come one. Tried friend's on my cart and his won't come on either
the pack needs to be a certain minimum voltage before the charger can see it. If the pack is not this minimum voltage the charger will not turn on.... When you plug the charger in it will click once when it recognizes the battery pack.... you can check voltage at the charger plug or you can trace the charger receptacle wires to the battery pack. and test it there at the the main POS and NEG connection.... Set the meter to 200 volts DC.

Re: Charger won't come one. Tried friend's on my cart and his won't come on either
OK scottyb, I tried it. I got nothing on the volt meter at the charger plug. I then traced the charger receptacle wires to the battery pack and tested it there at the the main POS and NEG connection. Again, nothing. I then went over and tested the individual batteries to see if there was any charge on them. There I got some readings. Each of them appeared to be sitting at about 8 volts (which is about the upper edge of the "bad" range on my meter. Does this give you any idea of what I might have going on? Many, many thanks!

One of 2 things .... the pack is too low for the charger to see and/or a bad connection from the charger recepticle to the pack.....

Re: Charger won't come one. Tried friend's on my cart and his won't come on either
OK thanks. So if the pack is too low for the charger to see, is there anything that I can do about it? Can I use my utility battery charger to charge the batteries individually, or as a pack?
Thanks! |

Re: Charger won't come one. Tried friend's on my cart and his won't come on either
This is tough because you are dealing with 8v batteries. Automotive chargers are 6v or 12v...... 6v being too little and 12v too much! 12v can be used IF you have a 2amp setting and it is used in 30 minute intervals with 15 minute cooling off periods by a battery tech who can monitor battery voltage and HEAT...
Post individual battery readings from your DIGITAL voltmeter..... |
