How hot is hot? Too hot to touch?
Is there water in the batteries?
Are you sure the batteries are wired correctly?
Post a photo of the battery bank.

Low batteries will heat up a charger pretty good.
What is your pack voltage?
Has it gone through a charge cycle or did you unplug because of heat?
Waiting for pictures and pack voltage.

No problem.
The pack voltage refers to the voltage of the whole "pack" of series batteries. Take the voltage reading from the positive on the first battery to the negative on the 6th battery. If your cart is a 36v the voltage should be somewhere around 38.2v and if your cart is a 48v the pack voltage should be around 50.9v.
