46.4 volts Is this my charging problem?
We have a 1996 Club Car. We bought it with dead batteries and replaced them immediately with 6 new ones. The charger has been a problem ever since. We took it to the shop and they said the charger was fine. On 3 occasions I have got the charger to click on and each time I have walked away and left it on overnight so I really don't know how long it was on but I assumed it had charged fully. The other day is clicked on and then of after less than a minute.
I have checked all the fuses and connections, replacing the questionable ones. The charging fuse looked a little melted so we replaced that and it began charging but apparently didn't charge long because it's dead after 10 minutes of driving. I checked the archives but haven't found the minimum voltage required for the charger to begin charging. It appears that my batteries are at about 15%according to the charts. Is this the problem? |

Re: 46.4 volts Is this my charging problem?
Club Car chargers are designed to work with something called the OBC (On Board Computer) . It is the plastic thingy with the hole in it for the Neg. Cable from the last battery running through it.
The charger should not run more then 16 Hours , if it does and batteries are not yet charged it will shut itself off. The OBC will also prevent the charger from coming on if the Pack Voltage for a 48 Volt cart is less than 36 Volts. OK so buy a digital Volt meter , each time before U drive check the Voltage. If it still needs charging Put it back on charger. DO NOT drive the cart when Voltage is down to 48 Volts or lower its dead. Read this http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/elect...-readings.html Each and Every time when you are through driveing the cart, plug it back into charge unit. |

Thank you. We tested the soleniod today and it seems good. If theOBC is bad would the charger work occasionally? I would think if it was bad there would be no charging at all.

I have A 97 cc, and just got through replacing the OBC. Mine was doing the intermittent charging thing for about 3 months, then just quit working. As soon as I replaced the OBC, the cart started charging like it should.
You can jumper around the OBC and see if the charger comes on and stays on, and if it does, I would bet your OBC is bad. |

Yes, the OBC can work right sometimes while others times no. If you bypass the OBC and the charger works your OBC is probly bad. Keep in mind the charger manual says it takes 3-5 seconds for the charger to come on once you plug it in. In other words, it won't kick on as soon as you plug it in like some other chargers. |

OK. I bypassed the OBC and the charger comes right on. I read on another board that some company was making some kind of timer for the charger that eliminated the need for the OBC at a reasonable price. Any word on that?
