Explain "Offset"

I have a '99 Club Car DS that has a Jake 6" spindle lift kit installed. I currently have stock-type tires on 10" rims and I want to upgrade to Styker's all-around. I'm unsure if I want just the tires to mount on my existing rims or if I want to buy new rims and tires and have them delivered, mounted and ready to install.

I continue see different options that have the word "offset" in listed. What is this "offset" all about and how would I know if I needed something with an "offset"?

off set is where the wheel mounts to the hub or crum.. the numbers mean how much back spacing you will have like

10 x 7 wheel with a 3+4 offset means

10 dia
7 wide
3 of back spacing messured from back of rim thats mounted to hub to the inner wheel lip...

most after market rims 10" are 3+4 which is goof for a lifted cart

most 12" are either 3+4 for off brand wheels and ITP is a 2+5

The position of the mounting flange determines whether the wheel is a negative offset or a center mount wheel. The mounting flage is the inner part of the wheel where the holes for the lug nuts are located.

Center mount wheels means that the mounting flange is located right in the middle of the wheel so there is about an equal distance to either side of the wheel from where you bolt the wheel to the cart. Most golf carts are originally manufactured with center mounted wheels.

Negative off set wheels means that the mounting flange of the wheel is closer to the body of the golf cart. When the mounting flage is closer to the body of the cart, it essentially lets the rest of the wheel hang further out, meaning that the tire will be further away from the golf cart body.

With custom and lifted golf carts, this helps to prevent the tires from rubbing against the fender walls or suspension and steering mechanisms of the cart. Negative off set wheels are best for off-roading or golf carts with lift kits -- carts that generally use bigger or wider tires

I knew they looked different, been in the back of my mind a few days. Just got a set of itp ss 112 wheels and they made the cart look wider. Been lookin and lookin at that cart, confirmed what i have been thinking.

in my words neg offset does not widen the cart neg offset there is more back spacing that there is front spacing...

you guys arent the only ones we get this call once a day about offsets...
most of the questions come from the side x side guys itp offers 3 different offsets for them...

Thanks for that info Wicked, i am running all sports 1 in. spacers and after i added the new itp wheels i noticed the difference. Could take those off now.

Thanks everyone. Great information. I understand what offset is now, but still am unclear as to whether it's a matter of necessity or preference as to whether an offset rim is used.

As mentioned above, I currently am running Kenda Pro Tour tires that are 205/50-10. The rims do not appear to be offset, although I didn't measure. I have the 6" Jake spindle lift kit installed and want to replace the Kenda's with Stryker 22x11-10.

Here's the questions.

- If I wanted to keep my existing rims, assuming they have no offset, would I be able to do that?

- If I did want new rims, would I have to order a no-offset rim or would either work OK?
