that sounds reasonable. you could use a switching buck converter for the 48v from 72V to avoid pulling from 60% of the pack. i think the albright spec sheet states 21W (0.43A @ 48V) for the coil dissipation.

12V is another option if the cart will always have a regulator.

i think im settled on the 48V clone...

Question Re: forward/reverse switch change to toggle switch

Ok,
lets add to this confussion.
Take and put a F/R contactor in the middle of a battery pack so you can run either 48 volts or 72 volts! It can be done. I have seen a cart already doing this but with a normal F/R cam. So I know it will work.
Anybody think they could draw up a drawing for it.

i've been looking at the SW-202 clones. seems to be the best bang for the buck.

I don't live in the states so should maybe not be passing comment but Albright SW180 contactor with either 12,24, or 48v coils are available online in the UK for GBP32 ($52) and the reverising contactor DC182 with 12,24,48 and 72v coils are GBP88 ($141) and spare contactor kits (spares) at GBP13 ($21).Sure postage etc. is extra but when I see figures of $360 mentioned, it may be worth looking into.see www.thetoolboxshop.com

Lightbulb Re: forward/reverse switch change to toggle switch

I ordered some 72 volt contactors the other day. They showed up right before I left for work yesterday afternoon. They are hugh!

its actually not as complicated as it might seem... the cam selects which of the 2 sources is sent to B+

Where in your diagram does it go from 48 volts to 72 volts.
Did I miss it somewhere.

you're right, it does not actually show 48V to 72V. the drawing was abridged for the sake of simplicity. it depicts selecting between 2 points in a series string, voltage or number of cells is irrelevant.
