Midnight Rider After destroying too many steering wheels trying to remove them I have had good luck rather than ruin a steering wheel to do the following
1-Block front and rear wheels so no motion is possible, then jack up and remove drivers side wheel and tire unit. This will give you access to the steering column and rack and pinion unit.
NOTE BE SURE WHEELS ARE STRAIGHT AHEAD RACK AND PINION UNIT IS IN CENTER OF TRAVEL.
2-Take the steering column universal joint lock bolts and nuts ( out ) of steering column end where it connects to steering shaft and ( also ) the rack and pinion unit end.
3- This should give you enough slack to move u joint assembly ( down ) enough to clear steering column shaft end spline.
4- Then align steering wheel and slip u joint unit onto steering shaft and replace bolts and nuts.
SOME EXPLANATIONS the steering shaft end has spline all the way around so can be installed in any position, where the rack and pinion end is slotted and bolt can only go through it in one place to lock.
In a few cases I have had to loosen the mount bolts holding rack and pinion unit to shock and steering bracket to get a little extra room to clear column splines but this is seldom? Good luck and I hoped this will be of some help.
